Rams finish opening weekend of Mountain West action with 0-0-2 conference record
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Colorado State women's soccer team played the Colorado College Tigers to a 0-0 draw from Stewart Field on Sunday afternoon to cap the opening weekend of Mountain West play.
Colorado State (2-4-4, 0-0-2 MW) went into extra time for the fifth time this season, and despite a combined 40 shots in 110 minutes of action, neither the Rams nor the Tigers (3-4-3, 0-1-1 MW) were able to break the scoreless deadlock. CSU earned its second point toward conference standings on Sunday following the Rams' 1-1 draw at Air Force on Friday evening.
CSU's opportunities throughout the match were many, including in the extra time periods, where the Rams had a 6-5 shots advantage. The Rams' best opportunity to break Sunday's stalemate came at the end of the first extra time period, as Alex Lanning just missed striking the game-winner into the top-left corner of the net. The chance was initially created on a hustle play by Janelle Stone, who beat a Colorado College defender to a 50/50 ball and pushed the play into the top of the Tigers' 18-yard box. The senior delivered the ball to Ally Murphy-Pauletto, who dropped the ball in the center of the pitch to set up Lanning's opportunity.
CSU goalkeeper Hunter Peifer (2-3-4) made six saves on Sunday, and in the 58th minute, came out of the goal area on a free kick to punch a dangerous ball away. The Tigers' top chance down the stretch came in the 89th minute, when CC's Lauren Milliet fired just over the crossbar from just outside the goal area. Peifer made the save on the Tigers' only shot on goal in extra time, which was taken by Milliet in the 96th minute. Peifer's performance was her second solo shutout of the season.
Caeley Lordemann's season-high five shots led the Rams to a 21-19 shots edge over the Tigers on Sunday. Each of Lanning and Makenzi Taylor had three of their own shots, including two shots on goal by Taylor. Hannah Gerdin, Kaija Ornes, Taylor Steinke and Stone each added a shot on goal for the Rams. Halley Havlicek, Lordemann and Beth Plentl each played all 110 minutes.
IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Bill Hempen
On the first weekend of conference action:
"Like I told our players, we have never gotten a result against Colorado College and we can add that to the list of teams that we have gotten a result against. The league is tough, soccer is incredibly challenging and a few inches really make the difference. To come out on the road the first weekend of conference and get two points, we'll take it."
On the play of Hunter Peifer in net this season:
"Hunter has helped raise everything about us as a club. It's a challenge to decide who is going to play in goal, and she is doing what she is supposed to do. Simply, she is stopping the ones we ask her to stop, and occasionally she comes off the line to do something special and make plays for our team."
On returning home this coming weekend:
"I think that in every sport, at every school, at every level, you want to defend your home turf, and I believe your chances of winning are better at home than on the road. We have played one more full game because of all the overtime games we have played, and we are certainly battling - that does not go unnoticed by the coaching staff. We're in a good spot right now."
NOTES
- The Colorado State women's soccer team finishes the opening weekend with two points in the Mountain West standings, marking the second time the Rams have started with two points or more (three in 2014).

- CSU played extra time in each of the three matches that the team played in the current three-match stretch on the road. The Rams have played five overtime matches this season overall.
