Rams fall to San Jose State, 1-0, on goal in extra time

Rams fall to Spartans despite a 14-13 shots advantage for the match

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State women's soccer team fell to San Jose State, 1-0, from the new CSU Soccer Field on Friday on a goal by the Spartans' Dorthe Hoppius in the second minute of extra time.

An untimely bounce doomed the Rams (2-5-4, 0-1-2 MW) in their seventh overtime match of the season and their third in as many matches to start conference play. The ball was played into the box from about 35 yards out on a free kick opportunity, where Hoppius collected the ball off of a deflection and scored on a shot to the right side of the net.

On that play, the assistant referee had raised the offside flag to indicate that Hoppius was offside on the play. However, the officiating staff determined that the ball had been deflected by a CSU defender prior to reaching Hoppius and the goal was allowed to stand.

Colorado State finished the match with a 14-13 shots advantage over San Jose State (6-4-0, 3-0-0 MW). Each of Makenzi Taylor and Alyssa Yoshida took a team-high three shots (one shot on gaol each), while Alex Lanning had two shots. Six Rams played the full 92 minutes, including goalkeeper Hunter Peifer, as well as Bailyn Furrow, Halley Havlicek, Beth Plentl, Janelle Stone and Taylor. Peifer (2-4-4) finished the match with three saves.

CSU put pressure on the Spartans' back line late, and came up with one of its most promising opportunities in the 80th minute. The Rams pushed the ball down the left side of the pitch before finding Alyssa Yoshida in the middle of the field. The freshman connected a pass to Beth Plentl, who fired the ball to the upper-right corner of the net. SJSU goalkeeper Paige Simoneau made a diving tip save on Plentl's attempt, keeping the match level at 0-0.

IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Bill Hempen
On the team's performance:
"I thought we played really well. In our game against Air Force, we give up a set piece to tie, and then, a set piece today. We're in every game; we just can't find a way over the hump. I've run out of words really, because I have no issue with the effort of our team. Of course, we have to score a goal and we haven't scored one since Air Force - we need to remedy that soon."

On the team's ability to keep opponents scoreless:
"One of things we've tried to remedy was goals scored right down the middle of the park. It was an issue for us with how we're trying to play and we're trying to force teams to go around us. We're very organized in the middle and the back and it makes it a challenge. Defensively, we've got that box checked; we just have to do a little better job on the other side."

Sophomore defender Halley Havlicek
On the team's performance:
"We're stepping up our level, and we're showing teams in our conference that we're here to compete. We're not just another team that you can roll over. We've had a lot better chances up front and we've been tighter in the back. We just have to take care of the opportunities we give away."

NOTES
- Colorado State has never previously started conference play with three consecutive overtime matches.
- CSU has not lost any match this year by more than one goal. Of those matches, three have gone to extra time.
- Each of Bailyn Furrow, Maddie Kessler and Makenzi Taylor made their respective second starts of the season.
