Caeley Lordemann scores her second goal of the season in the 28th minute
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Two Fresno State goals after a long weather delay proved to be the difference in a Sunday match between the Colorado State women's soccer team and the Bulldogs, as the Rams fell, 3-1, at the new CSU Soccer Field.
Â
The teams played to a 1-1 draw through 76 minutes, but each team was forced to take cover as lighting delayed Sunday's action by one hour and two minutes. Fresno State (6-4-2, 1-2-1 MW) scored the first of its final two goals on a Carly Bracken tally, as she finished on a Myra Delgadillo cross in the 79th minute. 55 seconds later, the Fresno State's Julia Glaser beat CSU goalkeeper Hunter Peifer center-high to extend the Bulldogs' lead to 3-1.
Â
Shots were nearly even, with the Bulldogs holding a 10-9 edge for the match. Colorado State (2-6-4, 0-2-2 MW) was led offensively by Caeley Lordemann, who matched her season high with five shots and scored the Rams' lone goal.
Â
Lordemann scored the first goal of the match in the 28th minute when she beat Fresno State goalkeeper Nicole Theroux (6-3-2) to the lower-right corner of the net. Lordemann was set up by Janelle Stone, who made a run down the left side of the field and found Lordemann on a hard, low cross.
Â
The Bulldogs scored all three goals after halftime, with the game-tying goal coming in the 63rd minute. The tally was recorded by Myra Delgadillo, who beat Peifer after a turnover at midfield. Fresno State's Maria Gomez set up the goal with a low through-ball to Delgadillo, who fired lower left for the goal.
IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Bill Hempen
On Caeley Lordemann's performance:
"She's been with us since this spring and she's getting used to playing in the bigger games with her teammates. She makes a difference for us in the middle for sure. We want her to shoot because she can – to put it in golf terms, some that play in the middle of the park just don't have it in the bag. She can bend balls, and chip balls behind defenders. She's quite a good player. The more chances she can get at goal the better, and today, we were inches away from tying the game on a run she made, sliding forward and hitting the crossbar."
Â
On the weather delay:
"I told our team it felt as if it was overtime, as if the game ended in a tie and then that was overtime. If you look at it that way, the last two games we've given up goals in extra time…it felt similar to Friday. It's something that we as a coaching staff have to address."
Â
Sophomore midfielder Caeley Lordemann
On her goal:
"The goal in general was really good, we started on one side of the field and finished on the other. I thought it was a majority of team work, it really wasn't just me."
Â
On being able to help the CSU offense from the midfield:
"I think I'm finally finding my place on this team, and my team is allowing me to take more chances and step up from the midfield. I trust our back line - I trust everyone really - and we just have to find ways to put the ball in the back of the net."
NOTES
- Emma Shinsky was in the starting lineup for Colorado State on Sunday, marking her first collegiate start.
- Caeley Lordemann's five shots match her season high. The sophomore also took five shots at Colorado College.
- Halley Havlicek, Lordemann and Beth Plentl each played all 90 minutes on Sunday.
