Colorado State’s Season Stays Perfect

2/16/2018 2:57:00 PM | Softball

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Colorado State softball team started the Hillenbrand Invitation with a 3-1 victory over Montana on Friday afternoon. The Rams start the season 5-0 for the first time since 1997.

Game 1 vs. Montana

After rain forced the cancellation of the game on Thursday night versus Arizona, the Rams started the Hillenbrand Invitational against Montana Friday afternoon. Both teams put runners on base, but left them on base in the first two innings. The Rams started the scoring in the bottom of the third, after Sarah Muzik led off with a single and moved to second the following at bat as Haley Donaldson laid down the sac bunt. Two batters later Lauren Buchanan hit a single up the middle to score Muzik and gave the Rams a 1-0 lead.

Colorado State added to its lead in the fourth after Tara Shadowen – who was making her collegiate debut – blasted a two-run homer to center.

Montana got on the board in the top of the sixth after it led the frame off with a double and followed it with an RBI single. The Grizzlies had runners in scoring position with one out, but the Rams' defense stayed true and ended the inning with a double play.

CSU could not add to its lead in the sixth, but finished the game forcing Montana down in order in the top of the seventh, including the final play being a double play.

The Rams' five hits were spread out over five different players, while Shadowen had two RBI via her home run. Bridgette Hutton recorded her third win of the season after hurling five innings. Larisa Petakoff came in for the final two frames and earned her first save of the season. The pair struck out four batters, while allowing just three hits – the first of which was in the top of the fifth.

The Rams will face Louisiana Monroe tonight at 9 p.m. MT
