Colorado State Off to the Best Start Since 1997

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Colorado State softball team continued the Hillenbrand Invite with a pair of victories over Bryant and Troy. The Rams are now 7-0, making their best start to the year since the 1997 season when the team started 8-0.
Game 1 vs. Bryant
CSU started the game walking in a run in the first frame after Hannah McCorkhill got hit by a pitch to push Madison Kilcrease across.
The Rams extended their lead in the next inning after Cori Gamboa got hit by a pitch to score Kaylynn Pierce. Lauren Buchanan made the score 3-0 after she hit a sac fly to center to allow Sarah Muzik to score.
Bryant evened the score in the third after a sac fly and a two-run homer tied the score at, 3-3.
The Colorado State offense didn't blemish as it scored six runs over the next three innings. Gamboa started things in the fourth inning with a solo homer to give the Rams the lead again. Muzik added a run in the fifth inning after an RBI single to increase CSU's lead to 5-3.
Amber Nelson started the scoring in the sixth frame with a double to left to score Buchanan. Two batters later, Tara Shadowen blasted her second home run of the season with a three-run shot to right field to give the Rams a 9-3 lead.
Bryant scored a run in the bottom of the seventh after constructing a small two-out run, but a strikeout ended the game.
Muzik, Nelson and Navarro all registered two hits for the Rams, including Shadowen hitting three RBI and Gamboa with two. Kaylynn Pierce started in the circle and hurled 2 2/3 innings before being relieved by Alison Petty. Petty finished the game and earned the win after throwing 4 1/3 innings. The pair allowed only five hits, while striking out six batters.
Game 2 vs. Troy
The second game of the day, the Rams' defense game into the light as it recorded their first shut out of the season with a 5-0 victory over Troy in the Hillenbrand Invitational.
Colorado State started its spree early, as Cori Gamboa singled down the left field line to score Sarah Muzik. The Rams added to their lead in the third inning after Amber Nelson tripled to center field to score a run and two batters later, McCorkhill knocked a single up the middle, to score Nelson to put the score 3-0 in favor of CSU.
The Rams added runs in both the fifth and sixth innings off of singles from Buchanan and Gamboa to hold a 5-0 lead with six out left. CSU put the Trojans down in order in the final innings to secure the victory and remain undefeated.
Corina Gamboa led the offense with two RBI and three hits, while Sarah Muzik scored two runs. Bridgette Hutton went the distance, earning her fourth win of the season and first complete game shutout.
Colorado State (7-0) will finish the Hillenbrand Invite on Sunday, playing Bryant at 12 p.m. MT.
