3/24/2018 6:57:00 PM | Softball
FRESNO, Calif. – It's a first. The Colorado State softball team shutout Fresno State, 4-0 for the first time in series history at Margie Wright Diamond on Saturday afternoon. The win was also the Rams second victory ever at Fresno State, (May 4, 2014).
The Rams (16-8, 3-2 MW) made their mark on the board first as Lauren Buchanan singled to center to score Sarah Muzik who started the game with a single up the middle.
The Bulldogs (16-14, 1-1 MW) were held to just one hit in the first two frames, while CSU added to its lead. Colorado State increase its score in the top of the third after it loaded the bases before a walk and hit-by-pitch walked two runs across. Madison Kilcrease forced a four-pitch walk for the first run and Hannah McCorkhill followed getting hit by a pitch. The Rams left two on base after a double play ended the inning, but lead, 3-0.
The Rams added a run in the top of the fourth inning after Corina Gamboa hit a single through the left side to score Sarah Muzik who singled up the middle two batters prior.
Colorado State's pitching staff was solid through the first four innings, allowing Fresno State just one hit or hitless in each frame.
Fresno State put a pair of runners on in fifth and sixth innings, but the Rams' defense forced them to stay there. CSU looked to add to its lead in the seventh, but stranded two runners itself heading to the final outs.
The Bulldogs threaten to break the shutout in the bottom of the seventh putting two runners on again, but a double play to third base ended the game and gave the Rams the shutout victory.
