Recap: Rams Drop Heartbreaker in Rubber Match with Bulldogs
3/25/2018 3:50:00 PM | Softball
FRESNO, Calif. – The Colorado State softball team dropped the rubber match with Fresno State, 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at Marie Wright Diamond.
Colorado State (16-9, 3-3 MW) got on the board first again, just like the prior two games in the series, in the first innings after Corina Gamboa blasted a three-run shot to left to give the Rams an early lead.
Fresno State (17-14, 2-1 MW) put runners on base in the first and second innings, but couldn't convert them to runs. Both team's defenses were playing strong as the Rams registered just two hits over the next five innings.
The Bulldogs avoided the shutout in the fifth as they started the frame with a solo home run to left. Fresno State's offense continued to produce in the following inning as it tied the game 3-3 after an RBI single and a wild pitch scored runs.
The Rams tried to retake the lead in the top of the seventh, putting runners in scoring position, but couldn't push them across home to score.
The Bulldogs started the bottom half of the inning reaching second base on a fielding error. The Rams recorded two outs and looked to get things done in extra innings, but a single that got lost in the sun down the right field line dropped in for the game winning RBI.
STAT OF THE DAY
Bridgette Hutton spun four scoreless innings and recorded four strike outs in the 5 1/3 frames pitched.
