Grijalva grabs singles win in return to lineup
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State tennis squad battled with Utah State on Thursday, but ultimately fell 5-1 in the Rams' first home Mountain West match of the season.
CSU (9-8, 0-2 MW) and Utah State (10-8, 1-0 MW) fought through snow and cold temperatures to complete all six singles matches outdoors at the University Tennis Complex. Doubles matches were only scheduled to be played if needed to split a tie.
Utah State jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but the Rams rallied and found themselves close to forcing the doubles tiebreak with a pair of hard-fought, three-set singles matches.
"We're proud of how we competed today," CSU head coach Jarod Camerota said. "We still need to get better but hopefully they take this as a sign that they can compete with anyone in the division."
Sophomore Alyssa Grijalva improved to a team-leading 11-3 in singles play this spring, defeating Maggie O'Meara on court 3; 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.
Utah State jumped out to a 3-0 lead prior to Grijalva's win, however. The Aggies picked up straight-set victories at positions 4-6 to put the host Rams in a bind.
At courts 1-2, freshmen Emily Luetschwager and Priscilla Palermo each won their first set but eventually lost in three to their opponents, giving Utah State the 5-1 victory.
"They're right there," Camerota said of the two freshmen. "I'm happy with how they competed. A couple points here and there and we might have been 3-all playing doubles for the win."
CSU will return to action Sunday for a 10 a.m. MT on Easter Sunday against Boise State at the University Tennis Complex. The match will be streamed live at CSURams.com/live.
