Rams take doubles point, Grijalva adds to team-best singles win total
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State tennis team lost to the Boise State Broncos, 4-2, at the CSU Tennis Complex on Sunday.
CSU (9-9, 0-3 MW) claimed the opening doubles point and later held a 2-0 match lead, but Boise State (11-7, 3-0 MW) rallied back to take the match win.
The Rams notched victories at No. 1 and 2 doubles to take a 1-0 match lead. Sophomore Alyssa Grijalva and freshman Priscilla Palermo won at No. 1 by a score of 6-3. The duo is now 9-4 in doubles play this spring. Junior Emily Kolbow and sophomore Riley Reeves then won on court No. 2 to remain perfect as a duo (3-0).
"I think we train them up well in doubles and they are doing the right things," CSU head coach Jarod Camerota said. "I'm proud of what they're doing in doubles and they've committed themselves to playing smart doubles."
Grijalva backed up her solid doubles performance with a straight-set victory at No. 3 singles over Lilian Poling, 6-2, 6-2. Grijalva is now 12-3 this spring, playing all 15 matches at the No. 3 spot.
CSU's 2-0 match lead would be short-lived, however. Boise State picked up the next four singles wins, but they didn't come easy. Two of the remaining singles matches featured sets that ended in tiebreaks. Palermo's first set against Wilhelmina Palmer went the distance with Palmer winning 7-6 (5) on her way to a match win. The second set of Emma Corwin's match versus Nancy Menjivar also went to a tiebreak, with Menjivar clinching the win for the Broncos with a 6-2, 7-6 (7) victory.
The Rams had several close calls on Sunday, and Camerota is looking forward to the team returning to its winning ways soon.
"I was proud of the fight today," Camerota said. "There were several points that were right there, back-and-forth. We keep getting right there and we will find that match to get over the hump and get a 'W' soon."
CSU will be on the road next week, facing New Mexico on Friday and Air Force on Sunday. The Rams' final two home matches of the regular season will be against Northern Colorado (April 19) and Wyoming (April 22).
