Recap: Rams Finish San Diego Classic Falling to No. 20 Minnesota

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Colorado State softball team finished the San Diego Classic not able to rally late as it dropped the final game of the weekend, 5-3 to No. 20/21 Minnesota.
 
The Rams' offense shown its light in the bottom of the second after Haley Donaldson led the frame off with a triple to center field. CSU added a baserunner in scoring position after Corina Gamboa was hit by pitched before Danni Klein pinch ran and stole second. Hannah McCorkhill followed and blasted a double to left field to clear the bases and give the Rams a 2-0 advantage. Colorado State couldn't register a hit the next two at bats, but McCorkhill crossed home on a wild pitch to cap the inning scoring.
 
Colorado State forced the Gophers down in order the next two innings, but things started to turn in the fifth. Minnesota put a pair of runners on and had two outs before the Gophers hit a home run to tie the game, 3-3.
 
CSU had runners on first and second in the bottom of the fifth, but couldn't manage to score them. Minnesota broke the tie in the top of the seventh after a lead-off single gave them a runner before a double two batters later pushed the run across. The Gophers added another run after an infield single scored their second run of the inning and a gave them a 5-3 lead.
 
The Rams produced a single in the seventh, but could not find the equalizer, falling in the finale 5-3.
 
STAT OF THE DAY
Hannah McCorkhill hit a two-RBI double in the second inning to give the Rams the lead.
 
NOTES
- The Rams have competed very well in all of its games against 'Power 5' opponents. CSU went down to the wire with both Oregon State and Minnesota, with the game decided in either the seventh or extra innings.
- Minnesota was the second ranked team the Rams played this season.
- Hannah McCorkhill was productive at the plate against the Gophers, recording two RBI in her double.
- Sarah Muzik also produced a team-best two hits against Minnesota.
- Bridgette Hutton was given the loss after hurling six innings.
- Rams finished the San Diego Classic 0-5.
 
NEXT
Colorado State will return home and host the Colorado State Classic March 9-11. The Rams will welcome Idaho State, Utah Valley and St. John's.
