Recap: Rams Earn Come-Back Victory Over Utah Valley, Run Out of Time Against St. John’s
3/9/2018 9:00:00 PM | Softball
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State softball got back into the win column on Friday afternoon, with a 5-3 victory over Utah Valley in the Colorado State Classic. In the second game for the Rams, they ran out of time, literally. The last game of the day versus St. John's was halted due to darkness. The game will resume on Sunday following the St. John's vs. Utah Valley, which is schedule to start at 9 a.m.
[UTAH VALLEY RECAP]
Box Score
Utah Valley (5-9) got on the board first after executing a double steal to swipe home in the first inning. The Rams left a pair of runners on in the bottom of the frame, but tied things in the second. CSU had runners on first and second with two outs before Sarah Muzik doubled to left center to push a run across. The Rams tried to add to their score later that inning and in the third, but left the bases juiced both innings.
The Wolverines broke the tie in the top of the fourth after a single and a stolen base had a runner in scoring position. The following batter knocked a single up the middle to score the baserunner and moved into scoring position again on the throw. Two batters later UVU scored its third and final run of the game on a fielder choice.
Colorado State would not trail for very long. Lauren Buchanan started the fifth inning with a solo-homer down the left field line before Corina Gamboa followed with one of her own to tie the game, 3-3. The Rams were not done. In the bottom of the sixth frame, Haley Donaldson took a 0-2 count with two outs and blasted a two-run home run to left to give the Rams a 5-3 lead late.
The Wolverines put two runners in scoring position with one out, but a fly out to center field and an out at third gave the Rams a double play since the runner at third left early.
QUOTES
Head Coach Jen Fisher on the offense…
"We have been trying to get our offense going again, and the three home runs by Lauren Buchanan, Corina Gamboa and Haley Donaldson really gave us that lift that we've been needing. It really opened things up for us offensively."
Fisher on Bridgette Hutton…
"I think she did a great job switching up her speeds and her changeup looked really good. Utah Valley's slappers were catching on, but she did a really good job controlling UVU's power hitter's timing and kept them at bay."
STAT OF THE DAY
Bridgette Hutton spun a charm for the Rams in the first game of the Colorado State Classic. The junior hurled a career-high 11 strike outs in the seven inning affair. She allowed just three runs and four walks.
NOTES
NEXT
Colorado State will continue the Colorado State Classic tomorrow with two games against St. John's and Idaho State.
