Recap: Colorado State finishes finale with victory over Spartans

4/22/2018 3:19:00 PM | Softball

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State softball team responded on Sunday afternoon with a 10-3 victory over San Jose State in the series finale at Ram Field.

Colorado State got on the board first in the bottom half of the opening frame after Corina Gamboa blasted her eighth homer of the season down the left-field line to give the Rams a 2-0 lead.

The Rams added to their lead in the third inning as Madison Kilcrease singled to right field to score two more runs. CSU pushed its lead to five in the fourth frame following Amber Nelson's third hit of the game to center, which scored Haley Donaldson.

Colorado State continued to hit the ball well, adding a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth off of Isabella Navarro's first home run in the Green and Gold.

San Jose State eliminated the shutout in the sixth inning scoring three runs after the loading the bases and drawing two walks and a fielder's choice.

CSU responded in the bottom half, pushing its lead to seven again as Nelson recorded a RBI single for her fourth hit of the day. Danni Klein followed with a sac fly to left before Nelson scored on a wild pitch.

The Spartans put a runner on in the top of the seventh, via a walk, but three-straight outs ending the game and gave the Rams the victory.

QUOTES
Head Coach Jen Fisher on the win…
"I thought Alison Petty did an awesome job. Coach P really had her dialed in and we were basically trying to forget the last two days; that wasn't us. You have to have a short memory in this game or it'll tear you down quick. I thought our approach at the plate was a lot better, obviously it helped getting those two runs in the first inning, which gave Petty some breathing room and let her settle in."

Coach Fisher on Amber Nelson's performance…
"She looked good. She is in a good place and even yesterday she looked dialed in. She is just trying to hit her pitch and she keeps coming back and works really hard. She has the right mentality so when those things come together for her, she is effective and I'm really happy for her."

Coach Fisher on Alison Petty's performance…
"She keeps getting stronger and stronger. To keep a great hitting team like San Jose State to two hits through five innings, is awesome."

STAT OF THE DAY
Amber Nelson continued to dominate at the plate, finishing 4-for-4 with two RBI, a double and a run scored.

NOTES
- Amber Nelson added to her weekend total with four hits. She led the Rams this series hitting .636 with three doubles, seven hits and two RBI.
- Both Corina Gamboa and Madison Kilcrease tallied three runs and each had two RBI, while Kilcrease recorded a double.
