4/29/2018 7:32:00 PM | Softball
SAN DIEGO – The Colorado State softball team went 10 innings with San Diego State on Sunday afternoon, but dropped the rubber match, 2-1 after a walk-off homerun.
Just like the previous two games in the series, Colorado State scored first. Corina Gamboa led the second inning off with a double before she crossed home plate the following at bat as Amber Nelson knocked a single up the middle to give the Rams 1-0 lead.
The Rams kept its small lead through the heart of the game until San Diego State tied things in the fifth after an RBI single. Colorado State responded in the next inning after Haley Donaldson hit a single up the middle to score Sarah Muzik who led the inning off with a single before moving into scoring position on a sac bunt.
The Aztecs tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom half of the inning with another RBI single.
Colorado State put a runner 60 feet away in the top of the seventh, but couldn't convert it to a run and the Rams' defense put SDSU down in order in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.
Both teams put runners on base in the extra frames – including CSU putting a runner on third with two outs in the ninth inning – but it wasn't until the bottom of the 10th that one reached home. SDSU led the inning off with a home run to right field to steal the series in walk-off fashion.
STAT OF THE DAY
Colorado State recorded 10 hits in the extra-inning loss, led by Sarah Muzik and Madison Kilcrease who both posted three.
NOTES
- Both Madison Kilcrease and Corina Gamboa hit extra-base hits for CSU; a triple and double, respectfully
- Amber Nelson was deadly from behind the plate, throwing out two Aztecs trying to steal second
- CSU's defense was in lock down mode when runners were on base, forcing SDSU to strand eight runners on base
- The Rams struggle at the plate when runners were in scoring position finishing 2-for-10 and 2-for-16 with runners on base
NEXT
Colorado State will return home to start its final home series of the season on Friday, May 4th at 4 p.m. MT against Boise State.
