Recap: Broncos spoil Rams’ senior day

5/6/2018 3:07:00 PM | Softball

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State softball team suffered a sweep for the first time this season against a Mountain West team as Boise State defeated the Rams 7-2 on Sunday. CSU recognized its four seniors prior to the first pitch as Madison Kilcrease, Hannah McCorkhill, Hayleigh Evans and Kaylynn Pierce all played their final game at Ram Field.

Boise State scored the first runs of the game in the top of the second inning after hitting a three-run home down the left field line to lead 3-0.

The Rams put runner on base in each of the innings, including two in scoring position in the bottom of the second, but failed to convert any into runs until the sixth frame.

Colorado State started the sixth inning with a double from Corina Gamboa to left field before moving to third during the next at bat. Two batters later, Madison Kilcrease knocked an infield single to short to score Gamboa and put the Rams on the board.

Trailing by two runs heading into the final inning, the Rams looked to make a comeback, but Boise State smothered those hopes as it scored four insurance runs off a walk, wild pitch and two-run scoring single to lead 7-1 late.

CSU chipped into its deficit in the bottom half of the inning, after Haley Donaldson hit a sac fly to right field to score Sarah Muzik who walked earlier in the inning.

QUOTES
Head Coach Jen Fisher on the series finale against Boise State…
"I thought we made a couple great plays. Hannah McCorkhill's defense really showed today, we had two nice plays at the plate and Haley Donaldson made a couple nice plays at short getting lead runners out at second base that were big for us. We did some good things on defense, but a team like Boise State exposes your weaknesses. Pitching wise, BSU knew how to throw us and they really kept us off balance all day."

Coach Fisher on finishing the regular season at UNLV…
"We have to have a lot of fight going into the final series. I think it is important for the younger players. It is different when you don't have a conference tournament – it is difficult to play hard through the end of the season. Hopefully they understand that there is something to fight for and to come with more energy than we had this weekend to finish strong."

STAT OF THE DAY
Haley Donaldson hit her fourth sac fly of the season in the bottom of the seventh.

NOTES
- Madison Kilcrease led the Rams offense with a 3-for-3 performance with a RBI
- Corina Gamboa recorded her 12th double of the season with a two-bagger to left in the sixth
- Sarah Muzik also generated two hits for the Rams, including drawing two walks and scoring a run
- Muzik has now reached base in 12 consecutive games, the longest current streak for the Rams
- Bridgette Hutton hurled the complete game allowing seven earned runs and walking four batters
-  The Rams left eight runners on base, due to finishing 1-for-8 when batters are in scoring position and 3-for-19 with runners on base

NEXT
Colorado State will finish the regular season with a series at UNLV starting on Thursday night at 7 p.m. MT.
