Second Ram All-Time to Receive Accolade
NEW ORLEANS – Winning the UCCS Open did not go unnoticed around the country for Thomas Chaston as he was named USTFCCCA's Athlete of the Week for NCAA Division I Men, announced Monday by the organization.
The national weekly award marks the second in program history for a Ram cross country runner. The first occurred on September 25, 2017 when Jerrell Mock earned the accolade after his win at the Roy Griak Invitational.
Chaston, a redshirt-freshman, crossed at 24:41.1 to win the UCCS Open 8K, beating an Air Force runner by a slim .2 seconds. The finish set a course record at Monument Valley Park North, which is located on the other side of town from Chaston's Cheyenne Mountain High School in Colorado Springs.
National Athlete of the Week is an award selected and presented by the USTFCCCA Communications Staff at the beginning of each week to 10 collegiate cross country athletes (male and female for each of the three NCAA divisions and two NJCAA divisions).
What They Said
Colorado State Head Coach Art Siemers
"Thomas has been training really well. We have high hopes for him despite being just a redshirt freshman. He struggled some at Notre Dame, but most our team did. We are proud of him for taking advantage of the week leading up to the UCCS Open and then showing what he is capable of. He came back to beat a tough junior from Air Force and set the course record. He set us up well going into another weekend race at Wisconsin."
Colorado State redshirt-freshman Thomas Chaston
"It was really nice to win the race in my hometown and in front of some family. I do think I had a slight advantage, because I've run on that course before. However, that is about it. I treated it like any other race. It means a lot [the award], but right now I am focused on the team."

The Rams are back in action on Oct. 18 in the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational, in Madison, Wisc.
