Rams cruise past New Mexico with series sweep

3/24/2019 2:46:00 PM | Softball

Colorado State swept the Lobos to improve to 23-4 overall and 6-0 in the Mountain West, while increasing its winning streak to 14 games.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Colorado State softball team cruised past New Mexico with a 16-3 victory in five innings on Sunday afternoon to earn the series sweep. The Rams improve to 23-4 overall and 6-0 in the Mountain West to hold its best league record ever since the league formed in 2000. CSU also has won the last 14 games – one of the longest active streaks in the country.

Rams 16, Lobos 3 (5) | Box Score

Colorado State spared no time scoring as Haley Donaldson set the sixth pitch of the game over the left field fence to give the Rams a 2-0 start. Amber Nelson, Danni Klein and Ashley Ruiz all followed in the inning, recording RBIs to finish the inning with five runs on six hits.

Nelson and Klein continued their performances in the second inning, each tallying another RBI to put the score at 8-0 in favor of the Rams.

CSU's offense kept rolling through the game, adding runs in the third and fourth frames, while the defense kept the Lobos off the scoreboard. New Mexico scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth after a pair of singles gave them two runs.

The Rams tagged on a few more insurance runs in the top of the fifth with another five runs on three hits. Buchanan and Ruiz tallied home runs – both two run shots to put the game out of reach at 16-2.

The Lobos added a run in the final frame with an RBI double before getting put down in order.

NOTES
- The Rams recorded three home runs in the shorten victory
- Both Danni Klein and Ashley Ruiz had three RBI apiece
- Seven different Rams registered a hit, including Amber Nelson who finished 3-for-3 with three doubles
- Haley Donaldson reached base in all three at-bats and score each time
- Jessica Jarecki (10-1) earned the win throwing the complete game, while recording another seven strikeout performance
- The Rams remain atop the Mountain West with a perfect 6-0 – which is the best mark for CSU since the league formed in 2000

STAT OF THE GAME
The Rams' offense exploded for 16 runs in the win, which ties a season high for scored runs in a game (Idaho State, 3/28). Amber Nelson also put on a hitting clinic, recording three doubles during her three at bats.

QUOTES
Head Coach Jen Fisher on the series sweep…
"Our offense did a nice job keeping their foot on the gas which is something we have been working on – not taking AB's off. We continue to enjoy production from everyone in the lineup and that is something our team takes great pride in. By no means should we get complacent, and I don't expect that from this team.

UP NEXT
Colorado State will take a quick break from Mountain West play and play at Northern Colorado on Tuesday for a 4 p.m., game. The Rams will then host Utah State next weekend for a three-game series starting Friday, March 29.
