CSU stays perfect at the Colorado State Classic II defeating Dayton and Syracuse
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State softball team stayed perfect at the Colorado State Classic II earning wins over Dayton and Syracuse on Saturday afternoon at Ram Field.
Rams 10, Flyers 0 (5) | Box Score
Colorado State again played a quick one with Dayton as they recorded eight hits and 10 runs to end the first game of the day early.
Amber Nelson got the offense going in the opening frame with a three-run homer to left field. The Rams then opened the scoring up in the third, scoring four runs on four hits with the help of three Dayton errors. CSU scored on a double-steal error before a sac fly by Lauren Buchanan to but the lead at 5-0. After Amber Nelson walked, Corina Gamboa knocked a triple down the right-field line before Isabella Navarro scored her with a single.
Colorado State put the cherry on top in the bottom of the fourth after Nelson hit her second home run of the game with another three-run shot.
NOTES
- Amber Nelson recorded six RBI from her pair of home runs – her fourth and fifth of the season
- Danni Klein finished perfect from the dish with a 3-for-3 performance, including scoring three runs
- Jessica Jarecki (7-1) earned the win with her third complete game shutout of the season
- Jarecki allowed just four hits and no walks, while punching out three batters

Like déjà vu, Syracuse scored in the first inning again, this time with an RBI single through the left side to lead early. Colorado State locked the game up at 1-1 in the bottom of the second after Corina Gamboa double down the left-field line to score pinch runner Brooke Polenz.
The Rams took the lead in the third after Tara Shadowen led the inning off hitting her third home run of the season and second in two games.
Bridgette Hutton kept the Orange offense quiet, putting them down in order in the fourth with help of two strike outs. CSU added to its lead in the fourth after Isabella Navarro double to center to score a run before Tara Shadowen kept her bat swinging with a single that got her to third after an Orange error, which also allowed a pair of runs to score to give the Rams a 5-1 lead. Colorado State wasn't done yet as Danni Klein knocked a two RBI single to right center, followed by Lauren Buchanan who blasted a double to right field to score three more runs and put the game in CSU hands, 8-1.
But the Orange wouldn't go quietly, nor quickly. Syracuse manufactured a small rally in the top of the fifth with a run on a single before a two-run homer cut the CSU lead to four. The Orange kept its run going in the sixth with another two-run shot to trail by just two heading to the final outs.
The Rams went down in order in the bottom of the sixth to put a little more pressure on pitcher Hutton. The senior put down the first two batters in the final frame before giving up a triple to right center to put the tying run at the plate. Hutton kept her composure and secured the win with a ground out to second.

- Danni Klein and Tara Shadowen both recorded two RBI apiece, including Shadowen finishing 2-for-3
