Best start for Rams in program history

FORT COLLINS, COLO. – The Colorado State women's soccer team defeated SIUE 3-2, handing head coach Bill Hempen his 300th-career win Sunday afternoon at CSU Soccer Field.

The Rams (2-0-0) completed the season opening weekend with two wins, which marks the best start to a season in the program's seven-year existence. SIUE (0-1-1) struck first in the 12th minute, and then pulled within a goal at 3-2 in the final minutes, but the Rams held strong to earn Hempen's milestone victory.

"There was a stretch of the game that we played very well," Hempen said. "They (SIUE) got on the board quick, but our players brushed it off and responded quick. It got closer than we wanted at the end, but we will take the victory no doubt. I told them sometimes you have to win that way. The 300th win means I've been coaching a long time. No, it was good, I could not of asked for a better group of student-athletes and coaches to share that milestone with. I am very happy that they were a part of this."

After the Cougars jumped up 1-0, Colorado State sophomore Kristen Noonan, a transfer from Cal State Fullerton, notched her first goal in the green and white off of a penalty kick in the 19th minute.

Six minutes later, senior captain Caeley Lordemann finished off a corner-header-deflection with a spectacular left-foot goal. The score caps a three-goal opening weekend for the Ram midfielder who had already jumped to the front of the CSU career points category in the opener on Thursday.

Coming back from half, sophomore forward Gracie Armstrong crossed to freshman forward Kaitlyn Abrams for a header that found a hole in between SIUE goalkeeper and the inside post. The goal in the 50th minute swung momentum to the Rams with the 3-1 lead.

Despite a Cougar goal in the 86th minute, the Rams defense fended off a final push, which included a free kick into the box in the final ticks of the clock.

Sophomore Ram goalkeeper Gabi McDonald (2-0) thwarted off two shots on goal, while defending 13 Cougar shots and six corners.

Next, the Rams take to the road with a match against Gonzaga on Thursday, Aug. 24 at 8 p.m. MT in Spokane, Washington.
