Defense Keeps Rams Rolling, Defeat Denver 1-0 in OT

CSU Improves to 4-1-1
FORT COLLINS, COLO – Just last week after Caeley Lordemann sank the game winning goal in a scoreless overtime thriller against Grand Canyon, the senior captain has done it once again and helped the Rams defeat Denver 1-0 in overtime Friday evening.
After a slow start offensively and under duress defensively in the first half, the Rams held off the Pioneers going into the half scoreless. The Rams had two shots compared to DU's 10. However, the Rams' defense came to play, and sophomore goalkeeper Gabi McDonald remained consistent in her game with eight saves on the night.
"That is a good team, I thought they would be one of the best teams we would play this season," CSU coach Bill Hempen said. "In the second half we discovered how to get ahold of the ball and emphasized putting more pressure on them, and that forced some bad passes and broke their confidence towards the end."
When the end of regulation hit, the Rams weren't afraid to keep up the pressure. Within five minutes of the first overtime, junior forward Taylor Steinke made her season debut by delivering a great pass down the middle of the field for Lordemann to claim her second game-winning goal in two weeks.
Lordemann put up her fifth goal in only five games this season, and if that's not impressive enough, she also has three game-winning goals this season. The senior midfielder from Greeley couldn't have done it without the support and help of her teammates.
"The game-winning goal was a complete team effort, and I was just there to finish it," Lordemann said. "At the end of the day it was our defense that held up, and without them we wouldn't be where we're at today; our long term goals are to get to conference this year."
The victory puts CSU at 4-1-1 for the best start in program history and the Rams are back in action next Friday at Valparaiso at 6 p.m.
