Rams Come Up Short at Opening Day in Mexico

2/13/2020 8:27:00 PM | Softball

Colorado State’s pitchers hurled both games tough, the offense just couldn’t get started.

PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico – The Colorado State softball team started the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge playing a pair of tough foes, dropping games to No. 12 Tennessee and Ole Miss. Both games were decided by just two runs, including going into extra innings against the Rebels.

Game One vs. Lady Volunteers | Box Score
Taylor Gilmore controlled the No. 12 team in the country for the majority of the game, keeping the Lady Vols to just four runs through six frames. Tennessee scored the first runs of the game with two runs in the second frame, but Colorado State responded in the fifth with a pair of its own to tie things up. Danielle Serna recorded her first homer of the year as she put the Rams on the board. UT added to its lead in the sixth inning with two runs after CSU made a couple of errors in the field. The Lady Volunteers scored their final two runs in the top of the seventh to going to final outs with a four-run lead. Colorado State looked to mount a comeback after Haley Donaldson hit a RBI double down the right-field line, but couldn't do anything more. Ashley Michelena led CSU with two hits coming in the fifth and seventh innings. Taylor Gilmore finished with six strikeouts and allowed just three earned runs.

Game Two vs. Rebels | Box Score
Neither team had more than five batters come to the plate during the game as it was a pitchers dual. The international tiebreaker rule was in place after the game was scoreless after seven frames. Ole Miss rallied in the top of the eighth with two runs and put the pressure on Colorado State. The Rams had great at-bats, but couldn't get their offense to accelerate. Jessica Jarecki had a great game from the circle, throwing the whole game allowing just one earned runs and just four hits. Tyler Trott recorded both hits for CSU, including drawing two walks.
