Pitchers Lead Rams to Pair of Opening Day Victories at Texas Classic

Colorado State’s pitchers combined for 17 strikeouts and allowed just six hits.
AUSTIN, Texas – Colorado State softball picked up a pair of wins at the Texas Classic on Friday, recording a season-opening victory against Texas A&M – Corpus Christi (1-0) and Maryland (5-1). Freshman pitcher Danielle Serna earned her first shutout of her career in her collegiate debut in the opener against the Islanders. Jessica Jarecki continued to throw effective from the circle in the second game of the day, recording a career-high 10 strikeouts against the Terrapins.
Game One vs. Islanders | Box Score
Colorado State scored the lone run of the game in the bottom of the first after loading the bases for Haley Donaldson who hit a sac fly to center. The Rams went on to put five runners on base, but failed to push them across. The Islanders had two different innings where they loaded the bases, but could not convert striking out in both the fifth and seventh innings. Danielle Sernea (1-0) earned her first collegiate win with a complete game shutout, allowing just three hits and seven strikeouts.
Game Two vs. Terrapins | Box Score
The Rams trailed Maryland for the first three-and-a-half innings after the Terrapins scored in the second frame on an RBI single. CSU tied the game in the bottom of the fourth after Danielle Serna knocked a single through the left side. Colorado State went on to score four runs in the following frame on three hits. Jessica Jarecki had a career night, fanning 10 batters including recording a strikeout in all but one inning. Corina Gamboa led the Rams from the dish with a pair of hits and RBI.
