Team home for one day, then back on the road once again
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – After a successful run at the Beach Tennis Tournament over the weekend, Colorado State's women's tennis team barely kept their feet on the ground in Fort Collins as they were set to depart Tuesday morning for the ITA Mountain Regional in Las Vegas.
Â
The tournament runs Wednesday through Sunday. This is the third consecutive time the event will be held in Las Vegas at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on the UNLV campus. The event features more than 120 players from 20 teams in the region, with play on 12 courts in both singles and doubles each day. Play begins Wednesday with doubles action at 10 a.m. (MT), followed by a full round of singles in two flights. Every player will be guaranteed at least two singles matches. Finals are slated for Sunday.
Â
The regional champions in singles and doubles automatically qualify for the ITA National Fall Championships.
Â
"We just get excited to play a lot of different teams in the region, and it's a great opportunity to look out for ranked teams, as well," CSU coach Mai-Ly Tran said. "It's the best tournament in the fall we have, so we're looking forward to great competition."
Â
The Rams have played in two tournaments this fall, bringing home titles each time. Radka Buzkova and Matea Mihaljevic won a doubles title at the season-opening Bedford Cup, while Lucia Natal won a singles title this past weekend. Both Buzkova and Sarka Richterova made the A singles final, but Tran elected not to have them play, so essentially, the Rams won a singles title, as well.
Â
In 2019, the last time the tournament was played (it was cancelled due to the pandemic last year), Stella Cliffe became the first Ram to reach the quarterfinal round at the ITA Mountain Regional since Emily Kirchem in 2006. The team also had two doubles squads reach the round of 16 that year.
Â
Tran feels the squad is in a great position to continue a strong fall.
Â
"I think we have a lot of momentum heading into regionals," she said. "We've had great competition, and the last two tournaments have given us a lot of confidence. We feel good about going into regionals and looking at new opponents."
Â
For Natal, this past weekend was her first slate of singles matches, going 4-0 during her run to the title. Buzkova has posted a 7-1 record in singles this fall, and she and Mihaljevic are an impressive 6-1 in doubles play.
