CSU to see new slate of teams at Beach Tournament
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The schedule is about to get busy for Colorado State's women's tennis team, starting with the Beach Tennis Tournament this weekend in Long Beach, Calif.
Â
The tourney begins a string of eight days of tournament play in the next 10 with the ITA Mountain Regionals following in the middle of next week in Las Vegas. After the team's first tournament, head coach Mai-Ly Tran put a focus on conditioning, which will certainly come into play for the squad.
Â
"I learned on that final day it came down to physicality and staying mentally tough in the finals," Tran said. "We worked a lot on fitness and hitting a lot of balls in play. I let the girls know we'd be heading west, and most of those girls and teams like to run and hit a lot of balls in play, so we're just preparing for some longer points and being more consistent."
Â
The Beach Tournament, hosted by Long Beach State, also includes UC Irvine, Grand Canyon, Cal State Fullerton and Cal State Northridge. There are three 16-player singles draws, two eight-team doubles draws and third with four pairings over the weekend. The Rams will have entrants in each draw.
Â
Friday features opening-round matches in both singles and doubles in all the draws, beginning at 11 a.m. Mountain Time. Saturday's play, which begins at 11 a.m., includes two rounds of single play and one round of doubles; Sunday (10 a.m. start) is reserved for placement matches.
Â
Radka Buzkova and Matea Mihaljevic combined to win a double title at the Bedford Cup, while both Buzkova and Tracy Guo reached singles finals. Getting the first chance to see her team in a competitive situation provided Tran with some data she needed to move forward in practice. No major changes were in order, but some tweaks definitely took place.
Â
"We were catering to our individual games for singles players and doubles teams as well," she said. "This week was spent fine-tuning each other's games. I think we feel confident that it was physically getting conditioning in and getting in the weight room. We just worked on little things with our games, but we have a better look at everyone's personal game."
