Host CU on Saturday; travel to DU on Sunday
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Colorado State is facing a challenging weekend on the Front Range with a pair of in-state tests on Saturday and Sunday.
Â
The Rams will host Colorado on Saturday at the indoor courts at Fort Collins Country Club, then head to Denver the following day for a matchup with the Pioneers. Colorado State will livestream Saturday's match, which begins at 3 p.m. The DU match will be played at noon at the Denver Tennis Park.
Â
Colorado is 5-2 on the season, while Denver is 5-3, but the Pioneers own a 4-3 victory over the Buffs from last weekend and feature the nation's No. 36 doubles team of Hada Chang and Taylor Melville.
Â
CSU coach Jarod Camerota knows his team, now 1-2, has a stern test awaiting them both days.
Â
"They're both solid teams and two of the toughest opponents on our schedule," Camerota said. "These are two big in-state rivals we'll want to do well against. DU is really good."
Â
The Rams hope to get back All-Mountain West singles player Priscilla Palermo this weekend, but if so, the senior will only participate in doubles matches.
Â
Camerota said the first three matches of the season have highlighted where the Rams need to improve in both doubles and singles play, and if Palermo does return, that will alter the doubles lineup.
Â
"In doubles, we really have to have a lot higher first-serve percentage, and our net players have to move a lot more and create uncertainty with our opponents," he said. "We're actually returning pretty well. In singles, we just need to be consistent for the length of two or three sets. We're showing signs, but it has to happen over two or three full sets."
