Rams Split Mountain West Opener at New Mexico

Colorado State took game one of the conference opener doubleheader, but dropped the second game on a walk-off.

ALBUQUERQUE, NM. – The Colorado State softball team began their Mountain West schedule splitting the double-header opener. The Rams grabbed the first game, 3-2 before dropping the second 6-5.
 
GAME ONE | Box Score
New Mexico scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second after an RBI single put the Lobos on the board. Colorado State responded in the following frame, scoring off an RBI single from Ashley Michelena to tie the game 1-1. The Rams kept their offense rolling in the fourth, taking the lead after registering three hits and scoring two runs. New Mexico cut into the lead with a run in the bottom of the sixth and tried to mount a comeback in the final inning putting two runners on base with one out, but the Rams secured the victory with two-consecutive outs.
 
Ashley Michelena led the Rams going 3-for-4 from the dish, including recording an RBI. Maya Matsubara added to the production with two hits and scoring a run. The Rams finished with nine hits, including a double from Haley Donaldson. CSU also did not strikeout while standing the dish. Jessica Jarecki (3-3) earned the win, throwing all seven innings, allowing just one earned run and striking out five batters.
 
GAME TWO | Box Score
Colorado State kept its offense going into the second game of the doubleheader, scoring three runs in the opening frame. Danielle Serna pushed the first run across before Tara Shadowen knocked a single to center to score two more runners and give CSU a 3-0 lead. New Mexico responded in the home half of the inning with a run before taking the lead in the second after scoring four runs on three hits. The Rams tie the game in the third after a pair of doubles pushed two runs across. New Mexico retook the lead in the fifth inning on an RBI single. Colorado State started the final inning with three straight hits, including a double by Peyton Allen to tie the game at 6-6. CSU looked to take the lead late, putting two runners in scoring position, but could not convert them. The Lobos put a runner on base with a single before a walk off double ended the game.
 
Peyton Allen led the Rams with three hits, including a pair of doubles. Both Ashley Michelena and Danielle Serna added a pair of hits each, including Serna putting up three RBI. Tara Shadowen also made her hit count, pushing across two RBI. Taylor Gilmore made the start in the circle and threw the first 1 2/3 innings allowing four hits and one earned run. Danielle Serna came in on relief and finished the game, getting tagged with the loss after allowing two earned runs, while striking out five batters.

Colorado State will finish the series at New Mexico with a rubber match on Sunday staring at noon.
