LARAMIE, Wyo. – After getting back to playing again on Saturday, Colorado State's women's tennis team returned to winning on Sunday, taking a 4-3 decision from Nevada at Wyoming's Indoor Tennis Facility.
Â
The victory improved the Rams to 2-4 on the season, and it was the first Mountain West win for the team this year by taking the doubles point and three of the six singles matches.
Â
All three doubles matches finished with 6-3 scores, with the Rams winning at No. 1 (Priscilla Palermo/Tracy Guo) and No. 3 (Emma Corwin/Anastasiia Kotsyuba). To earn the win, the Rams split the singles competition, picking up victories from Lou Regen at No. 3 (6-2, 6-2), Alyssa Grijalva at No. 4 (6-1, 5-7, 7-5) and Kotsyuba – the last match on the court at No. 6 – secured the win for the Rams, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2.
Â
She was also the final match on the court in doubles play.
Â
"She played well. Â Nastya had to sit around the whole time with only four indoor courts, and then played a three-setter to clinch it," CSU coach Jarod Camerota said. "It was a full team effort. Everybody got a win in singles or doubles. We talked into the weekend we needed to compete perfectly and play with great energy. We weren't going to play perfectly, but we did play with great energy and competed both on Saturday and Sunday and came away with win."
Â
Camerota could tell a noticeable difference between the two days, especially the way his team reacted to crucial points. Saturday's match with Fresno State (a 4-0 loss), was the first time the Rams had played an opponent in 25 days, having had to cancel eight of the first 12 scheduled matches due to COVID concerns.
Â
Against the Wolf Pack (5-7, 0-6), the Rams were more in tune with what they needed to do to win points, and eventually, secure games and sets.
Â
"The level of tennis was definitely better today than yesterday," Camerota said. "That's what we expected. Even if we didn't win, we were still going to compete, be loud and play with energy."
Palermo notched her 53rd career doubles victory breaking an eighth-place tie with teammate Emily Luetschwager, who sat out this weekend's matches. It was also her 29th career dual doubles win, leaving her in a tie for 11th place at CSU with teammate Alyssa Grijalva.
Â
Grijalva's singles victory gives her 60 for her career, leaving her in eighth place all time.
Â
The Rams have two home matches scheduled next week, bringing in San Diego State (Saturday) and UNLV (Sunday) for 1 p.m. matches. A live stream will be available for both, with Sunday serving as senior day as the program honors five players.
Â
"I thought Lou played really well in her straight-sets win, and all three doubles teams were good," Camerota said. "We'll just keep getter better and better as we get out and hit more balls and play more matches. Especially playing more matches. We're super excited to be home next week and play two more matches. I can't wait to get back to work."
