Rams Take Doubleheader, Series at Marathon Opener

Colorado State and San Jose State went 13 frames in the doubleheader opener as the Rams secured a series win, taking both games on Friday night.

San Jose State scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth off a solo homer to lead 1-0. Colorado State responded in the sixth after Hailey Smith hit her second home run of the season with a solo to left to tie the game. Ashley York followed with a triple at the next at bat before scoring on a single from Peyton Allen to take a 2-1 lead.

The Spartans retook their lead in the sixth after three-consecutive singles scored a run to tie the game before a fielder's choice allowed SJSU to take a 3-2 lead. Colorado State had one out in the top of the seventh with two runners on before Danielle Serna hit a sac fly to center to tie the game 3-all.

The Rams looked to take the lead in the eighth after putting a runner 60 feet away with two outs, but could not record the timely hit. Both San Jose State and Colorado State put a runner on third in the eighth inning and failed to score.

Colorado State broke the five-inning scoring drought in the 13th inning after Hailey Smith led the frame off with a single before advancing to second on a Spartan error. A sac bunt pushed Smith to third before a single by Peyton Allen scored her to take a 5-4 lead. Sydney Hornbuckle entered the circle for Colorado State in the final frame and allowed a leadoff single before putting the Spartans down in order to secure the win and earned her first save of her career.

The 13-inning marathon had a combined 98 batters come to the plate with 21 hits and 28 runners left on base. The Rams totaled four extra-base hits, led by Ashley York who had a double and a triple in the win. Hailey Smith knocked her second homer of the year and Tara Shadowen recorded three hits, including a double, at five trips to the plate. Jessica Jarecki earned the long-winded win after throwing 12 frames and allowing two earned runs with 12 strikeouts. Sydney Hornbuckle earned her first save with the final three outs, which included a strikeout.

After a 4-plus hour game one, the Rams were back at it in game two as they put runners on base in all seven frames except the second inning. Colorado State scored first in the top of the third after a lead-off double by Jalyn McGuffin came around to score after a single by Ashley York. The Rams added another run in the frame after York touched home after a wild pitch to lead 2-0.

San Jose State got on the board in third after a leadoff triple followed by a single score its lone run.

The Rams added to their lead in the following inning after a single and a double pushed a pair of runs across to put Colorado State up, 4-1. CSU added an insurance run in the sixth after three hits, all consecutive singles, brought in Peyton Allen.

The Spartans recorded a hit in the sixth and seventh innings, but nothing more as Julia Cabral kept them in check to earn her fifth win of the season. The sophomore tossed the complete game, allowing four hits and just one earned run while striking out six batters. The Rams had four different batters register multiple hits, led by Hailey Smith and Peyton Allen who each had a double in their two hits and scored a run.

Colorado State will finish the season tomorrow against San Jose State with the first pitch at 1 p.m., MT.
