Three Doubles Teams and Six Singles Advance at ITA

The whole squad is playing well at Mountain Regionals
LAS VEGAS – Day one is done for the Rams.

"We didn't start the day exactly how we wanted to play in doubles," CSU coach Mai-Ly Tran said. "We faced some tough opponents who fought back but our players handled key points very well. They were able to rise up to the occasion."

Rising up to the occasion is exactly what Tran's squad did. More than 120 women's collegiate tennis players competed today in the first round of the ITA Mountain Regionals. The CSU doubles pairing of Sarah Weekley and Ky Ecton defeated Air Force's Courtney Swift and Kayleigh Yun-Thayer, 8-4. Viktoryia Zhadzinskaya and Luana Avelar lost to Denver's Anastasia Simonov and Caroline Driscoll, 8-1. The pairings of Zara Lennon and Emily Dush and Radka Buzkova and Sarka Richterova had first round byes.

"I think nerves came in to play, but the girls made adjustments and finished the day strong in singles," Tran said.

For the main draw singles, four Rams have advanced to the next round of play. Dush defeated Mila Stanojevic from CU in three sets, losing the first 5-7 but coming back 6-3 and 7-5. Richterova beat Anastasia Luneva of Nevada in two sets, and Buzkova, the No. 2 seed, beat Marta Carcia Reboredo of Montana State in two sets as well. Lennon had a three-set match against Emilee Astle of BYU, prevailing 6-2, 1-6, 6-4. Luana Avelar dropped her match to fifth-seeded Taylor Melville of Denver in straight sets.

In the flight two singles, Weekley and Zhadzinskaya both advanced with straight-sets victories, but Ky Ecton had to withdraw from her match with an ailment.

"Today was a great confidence boost for them" Tran said. "We're looking forward to Day 2."

Thursday's play features two rounds of doubles with 32 in each and following will be a round of 16 singles.
