Four players advance in ITA Mountain Regional draws
LAS VEGAS – The morning was rough, but the afternoon was stellar for Colorado State's women's tennis team as four players reached the singles quarterfinals in the two draws at the ITA Mountain Regional.
In the main singles draw, Sarka Richterova and Radka Buzkova reached the quarterfinals by posting a pair of wins on the day and with similar routes – both started with wins against BYU players, finishing with victories against Colorado opponents.
Richterova began with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Tina Marie Li of BYU 6-4, 6-0, then followed it up with a win over 10th-seeded Aya El Sayed, 6-1, 7-6. The second-seeded Buzkova was just as impressive, starting with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Emmie Moore, then taking down Elys Ventura in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 6-0.
The Rams did sustain two losses in the bracket as Emily Dush lost to Andrea Beltran of DU 1-6, 6-0, 6-2 and Zara Lennon lost to Pauline Ernstberger of BSU 6-1, 6-3.
For the flight two singles, Viktoryia Zhadzinskaya and Sarah Weekley both won a pair of matches to reach the quarters. Zhadzinskaya started with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Shivika Agrawal of Montana State, followed by a victory over Boise State's Bhakti Shah 6-1, 6-4. Weekley opened with a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Satoho Toriumi of New Mexico, then beat Boise State's Shauna Hefferman 6-2, 6-4.
The doubles action was very close, just not in the Rams' favor. The pairing Dush and Lennon fell 8-7 to Weber State's Ana Morret and Megan Davies; Buzkova and Richterova lost 8-6 against UNM's Katherine Jhang and Leonie Hoppe. The third team of Weekley and Ky Ecton withdrew due to an injury to Ecton. All three CSU teams, including Luana Avelar and Zhadzinskaya, have consolation matches upcoming.
Friday's schedule begins with a round of 16 doubles and the quarterfinal round of doubles. Following that will be the quarterfinal singles and any added matches.
