One Ram Advances to Singles Semifinals

Zhadzinskaya drew opponent from across the border
LAS VEGAS – Viktoryia Zhadzinskaya was the lone representative from Colorado State women's tennis to remain in the championship side of a bracket during the third day of the ITA Mountain Regionals tournament, but the squad was able to pick up a couple of victories in later consolation rounds.

"Vika had a great performance and played so well against a tough opponent," CSU head coach Mai-Ly Tran said. "It's awesome to see her reach the semis in this competitive tournament."

Zhadzinskaya swept Lucia Malinak of Wyoming in two close sets during the flight two singles play, 7-5, 7-6. On the other side of the bracket, teammate Sarah Weekley won her first set against BYU's Yijia Jiao 6-4, but Jiao came back and took the next two sets 6-4, 6-3.

"We knew we would have tough opponents in the quarterfinals, and we battled for every point," Tran said. "Today it was not enough but I'm so proud of how each player played and competed."

The main singles draw did not go as expected for the Rams. Sarka Richterova and second-seeded Radka Buzkova had the same format of scores in the quarterfinal round – loss, win, loss. Richterova was defeated by top-seeded Molly Helgesson of UNLV, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2. Buzkova lost to sixth-seeded Taylor Melville of Denver in the tiebreaker after coming back from a 6-0 set. Buzkova won the second 6-4, and then lost 6-2.

In the added singles matches, Luana Avelar defeated Noesjka Brink of Wyoming in a triple-set battle. She lost the first set 7-6 but came back 7-5 and 10-8. Emily Dush lost a resilient match to Utah's Marcela Lopez with the scores of 2-6, 6-0, 10-5 and Zara Lennon beat Cindy Hu of UNLV 6-1, 7-5.

"We will look to finish the tournament strong and take this experience home with us to get better," Tran said.

Saturday's play will begin with semifinal doubles, then semifinal singles, and followed by the added matches.
