CSU gains experience at All-American Championships
CARY, N.C. – Playing against the best in the country is an honor. Picking up a win along the way makes the trip even more valuable.
Â
Both of Colorado State's women's tennis teams doubles tandems won matches in the opening round of the qualifying draw at the ITA All-American Championships on Monday, held at Cary Tennis Park. The team was 2-3 overall in the five matches played by the four Rams.
Â
The pairing of Emily Dush and Sarka Richterova opened play with an 8-5 victory over Sophie Luescher and Moral Martinez of Oregon before dropping a tight 8-7 (0) decision to Thasaporn Naklo and Chie Kezuka of Iowa State in the round of 32. The duo of Radka Buzkova and Zara Lennon followed the same path, beating Vanderbilt's Celia-Belle Mohr and Bridget Stammel 8-1 in the opening round, then falling to 8-2 to Nikita Vishwase and Anastasiya Komar of LSU.
Â
Earlier in the day, Buzkova lost her singles match to Texas' Marlee Zein, 6-2, 6-2. She slipped into the consolation round where she will face – of all people – Wyoming's Maria Oreshkina.
Â
"It was great to see our teams play well and show what they are capable of," CSU head coach Mai-Ly Tran said. "We raised our levels and proved we can play with the best. It's high-level tennis, and this is the standard. CSU had a great showing today."
Â
The tournament is a two-match guarantee, so the doubles teams were officially eliminated from the draw. Buzkova's consolation match begins at 7 a.m. Mountain Time.
