Buzkova Splits Matches at All-American

Ram wins Border War matchup out East
CARY, N.C. – Traveling 1,719 miles to face some of the top competition in the nation, as luck would have it, Radka Buzkova drew an opponent from right across the border.

In the opening round of singles consolation at the ITA All-American Championships, the Colorado State senior drew Wyoming's Maria Oreshkina, a Border War matchup of All-Mountain West singles performers. Oreshkina took the first set, but Buzkova took the win 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.

It was just a curious twist, but a win all the same.

"We would prefer to play players from outside our conference and region, but it's luck of the draw and she's a tough opponent," CSU coach Mai-Ly Tran said. "I'm proud of the way Radka has been so strong and battled through her matches."

The win advanced Buzkova in the draw, where she faced Iowa State's Ange Oby Kajura. The match required the full three sets, with the Cyclone winning 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.

It was the first time Colorado State was represented in the prestigious event, and the experience is one Tran feels will pay off this season for the four Rams who traveled to the tournament, with both doubles teams also winning a match in the opening round.

Buzkova was the busiest of the bunch with her singles qualification, and Tran was impressed with her ability to go the distance twice on the day, especially early in the season.

"Radka played two three-setters and it was great to get the match play for her," Tran said. "Radka is an extremely gritty player, and all of this experience helps her to play in top form."

Colorado State's next event will be another hosted by the ITA, the Mountain Regionals Oct. 12-16 in Las Vegas. Last year, Buzkova and partner Matea Mihaljevic became the first CSU players to win a regional title, facing teammates Sarka Richterova and Somer Dalla-Bona in the doubles draw. Both teams advanced to the ITA Fall Nationals.
