Rams Set To Face Gonzaga At Home

Team is coming off a sweep of Metro State

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – A stretch of three consecutive weeks of matches is great for a team trying to build up momentum, and for Colorado State's women's tennis team, this Friday represents the halfway point of that run. A challenging match at home this Friday only makes it more appealing.

The Rams, fresh off a 7-0 sweep of Metro State this past Saturday, hosts Gonzaga on Friday night (7 p.m.) at the Fort Collins Country Club. Live scoring and a live stream are available.

Gonzaga enters the dual 2-1, with both wins coming this past weekend against Montana State and South Dakota, a team the Rams will face next weekend in Nebraska. For Colorado State's players, not only was last week's sweep confidence-boosting, but so was the fact they played in front of a strong crowd of fans at the country club's indoor courts.

"I think Gonzaga will be a test. They're a strong team, talented, but I think we're pretty even," CSU coach Mai-Ly Tran said. "We'll see how much the home-court advantage helps us out. I have a lot of respect for them, but also, I'm just excited for an even match.

"We talked about that after the match. We were impressed with how many fans came out and how much energy it gave them and how it felt to play in front of so many fans. I think they're excited to have another home match, a night match, on Friday."

The Rams continued their strong run in doubles play, with all three teams carrying impressive marks going into the match. Ranked No. 40 in the country, Radka Buzkova and Matea Mihaljevic are 17-2 on the year, and with a win Friday, both will move into the top 10 in program history for most doubles wins in a season by a player with 18. They are already closing in on the top five career victories by a tandem, needing to reach 23 wins to reach that point.

The pairing of Somer Dalla-Bona and Sarka Richterova (which has played at the top spot the first three duals), is 9-5 on the year, while the No. 3 grouping of Tracy Guo and Lucia Natal is 5-0 since being matched.

Buzkova leads the team in singles victories at 12, while Richterova has 10, Dalla-Bona nine and Natal eight. Right now, Tran and the team are focused on improving each time out, and a consistent run of play will only help.

"This is a test, and I think they appreciate any opportunity they get to play. We are treating this as a marathon, and we make sure it's a match for us each week to get prepared for the conference matches," Tran said. "What's nice is last week was different, because it was our first home match indoors. When we played before, we were playing outdoors, so it's a different type of tennis. The more matches we can have like this will prepare us for conference, be it inside or outside."
