Tran excited for first outing against Colorado

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – By nature, a matchup between to in-state teams is considered a rivalry, and Mai-Ly Tran in her first year as the Colorado State women's tennis coach is hoping to see matches with Colorado be considered a rivalry.

Though the two teams have not played every year, the Rams own just win over the Buffs, and that came in the program's second campaign, 1976-77. Tuesday's noon meeting in Boulder will be the first time they've faced off since 2019.

"I think it's great. Coming to Colorado State, I don't know if it's a rivalry, but they're an impressive team that's done well against us," she said. "I like the challenge in that sense of the opportunity. One of my goals is to turn it into a rivalry."

Colorado will be the third team out of the Pac-12 the Rams have faced, the first one which is not ranked. CSU dropped a match to a ranked Arizona State squad in January, then dropped a 4-3 decision to No. 44 Arizona last weekend, the second match of the day last Sunday, both in two different cities.

It put Colorado State's dual mark at 5-3, the other loss coming to Nebraska.

"We had a great weekend in Arizona. The girls are playing well and it's good tennis," Tran said. "We've gotten better each match, and I think it's been nice in practice. The girls had great energy, but we've also been able to take some time to rest. We're itching for the second half of the season, and we see Boulder as a close match and a good team. It's a good opportunity."

The Rams have four singles players with more than 10 wins on the year, leading with Radka Buzkova's 15-4 mark, winning her past six matches and all five during the dual season. Somer Dalla-Bona has posted 12 wins, Lucia Natal and Sarka Richterova 11 each.

Buzkova has team with Matea Mihaljevic in doubles to be ranked No 52 in the country, sitting at 19-3 on the season. Dalla-Bona and Richterova are 11-6 on the year.

Colorado State will have a busy week, with a pair of road matches in California on Friday and Saturday, the final tuneups before returning to California to open Mountain West play.

"We have a few non-conference we're hoping to be able to play outside before we start our conference matches in California," Tran said, hoping Tuesday is one of them with a forecast calling for sunshine in the 60s.
