Dalla-Bona picks up victory at No. 5 spot

LOS ANGELES – In what shaped out to be the toughest week on the schedule, Colorado State's women's tennis team faced the toughest task to date on Friday, squaring off with No. 17 Loyola Marymount on the road.

The Lions, the fourth team the Rams have faced this season which is currently ranked, posted a 4-1 victory, with Somer Dall-Bona's singles victory in the fifth spot the Rams' lone point of the day.

"They came out strong in doubles, but in singles, we had a path on four courts to get four points and just came up a little bit short," assistant coach Taylor Hollander said. "Radka Buzkova and Somer were beasts; 10 more minutes and Radka probably has us down 3-2 with two courts still on. Sarka Richterova continues to be consistent, and Sarah Weekley showed improvement."

LMU won the doubles point with victories at the Nos. 2 and 3 positions. In singles, Dalla-Bona won in straight sets, 6-3 in each, over Isabella Tcherkes-Za, which at the time made the match a 3-1 edge for the hosts. It was Dalla-Bona's 13th singles victory on the season, the second most on the team behind Buzkova.

Richterova dropped a three-setter at No. 2, while Buzkova (No. 1) and Weekley (No. 6), were in the second set of matches in which they'd won the first set.

"I'm very proud of these ladies," Hollander said. "They came out believing and they know how good they are. I'm also thankful for (volunteer assistant coach) Scott Langs; he was a huge asset on all the courts."

The weekend doesn't get much easier as Colorado State (6-4) travels down the road to take on Cal State Fullerton, currently ranked No. 66, at 12 p.m. (MT) on Saturday. All four of the Rams' losses this year have come to teams currently in the ITA rankings (No. 25 Arizona State, No. 50 Arizona and No. 55 Nebraska are the others).

"It's never easy to play ranked teams. They are ranked for a reason, but it's great to get this high level of competition before going into conference matches," Hollander said. "I think the team has been improving every week, and I'm eager to see how these matches prepare us in the long run. There's a lot to learn from a loss like this. Sometimes you learn more from the losses than the wins."
