Team battles No. 44 Wildcats in close decision

PHOENIX/TUCSON, Colo. – They knew it would be a long day, one which would test more than just their tennis skills. As Colorado State's women's tennis team pushed through to the end in a pair of non-conference duals in different cities, they came away with a split and a bit of confidence.

They started in Phoenix, ended in Tucson, opening with a win over Grand Canyon, then falling in a tight match to No. 44 Arizona.

"I knew this would be a challenging trip for us," CSU coach Mai-Ly Tran said. "It was an overall positive, successful trip in my eyes."

The Rams were ready to go at the alarm sounding, moving to a 4-2 victory over Grand Canyon at the GCU Tennis Facility in Phoenix. Colorado State secured the doubles point as the No. 2 team of Somer Dalla-Bona and Sarka Richterova won 6-2, with the No. 3 tandem of Tracy Guo and Lucia Natal prevailing 6-3.

In singles play, the Rams won all three of their matches in straight sets, with Radka Buzkova's 7-6 (4), 6-2 victory the deciding factor in the team result. The Lopes won at the top two spots, with the Rams' other two wins coming at No. 4 from Dalla-Bona (6-0, 6-2) and Natal at No. 6 (6-2, 6-3).

"We didn't play our best tennis in our first match, but we took care of business," Tran said. "It's always great to transition outside and get a road win."

After getting back in the vans and traveling nearly two hours to Tucson, the team didn't give up much in a 4-3 loss to Arizona. After dropping the doubles point, Colorado State split matches in singles play, with Buzkova (No. 2), Dalla-Bona (No. 4) and Natal (No. 6) all winning in straight sets. Buzkova's second set went to a tiebreak in a 6-3, 7-6 (3) win, while Dalla-Bona cruised 6-0, 6-2 and Natal battled to a 6-4, 6-2 decision.

"I'm so proud of how the girls competed against Arizona," Tran said. "It was a challenging atmosphere against a home-court advantage. I told them to rise up to the occasion, and they exceeded that. Unfortunately, it didn't go our way today, but we took so many positives from it."

The Rams' next match will keep them on a road, but a much shorter trip, as they take on Colorado in Boulder on March 15 (12 p.m.)
