Buzkova wins 21st singles match to crack program’s top 10 for a season
LAS VEGAS – Another weekend of strong play didn't produce a sweep of Mountain West matches, but Sunday's loss to No. 70 San Diego State doesn't serve as a deterrent for the Colorado State women's tennis team.
Â
The loss drops the Rams to 10-7 on the year, each defeat coming at the hands of a team currently ranked by the ITA. The team sits at 4-2 in Mountain West play after the 4-2 setback to the Aztecs with four more conference matches remaining in the regular season.
Â
"I'm so proud of the way we competed all the way until the end today against a tough opponent," CSU coach Mai-Ly Tran said. "I think we were disappointed in the result, but we are encouraged by our improvements. This team keeps getting better, and I'm proud of the way they keep believing in themselves and leaving it all out there. Credit to San Diego State, they played very well."
Â
San Diego State, which is now 5-1 in league play, set the outcome in motion by earning the doubles point with wins at the Nos. 1 and 3 spots. Singles wins at Nos. 1, 4 and 6 secured the team win, with the Rams able to pick up points from their second and third players in the lineup.
Â
At No. 2, Radka Buzkova continued her strong run at singles, beating Tamara Arnold in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. That followed her win on Saturday vs. UNLV when she dropped just two games in total. The Rams other win came from Sarka Richterova at No. 3, where she needed three sets to prevail over Nnena Nadozie. After dropping the first set 6-3, the junior returned with set wins of 7-5 and 6-1.
Â
The Rams lost one three-set outcome and a second match was left unfinished in the third set, while the other loss in singles included a tiebreaker.
Â
The win was the 21st of the season in singles play for Buzkova, tying her with seven others for sixth-best in a single season. She leads the Ram with a 21-5 mark in singles play, riding a four-match win streak and moving to 6-0 on the year in the No. 2 position.
Â
"It's great to see Radka playing really well," Tran said. "She's been so reliable and that gives the team a lot of confidence we can count on her. Sarka beat a tough opponent today, as well. She was so mentally disciplined and found a way to win."
Â
Colorado State, which has now played 13 consecutive matches on the road, will extend the run next weekend with a trip to Laramie to face Boise State (Friday) and Utah State (Saturday), both scheduled at 2 p.m.
