CSU blanks Utah State for fourth win in Laramie
LARAMIE, Wyo. – The Wyoming Tennis Complex has become a home away from home this season.
On Saturday, Colorado State's women's tennis team swept past Utah State 4-0 on the Cowgirls' home turf, the fourth neutral-site Mountain West victory the Rams have secured at the facility. In fact, the Rams will have played as many matches there as they have at home this season when next weekend concludes the regular season with a pair of home matches.
Colorado State improved to 6-2 in Mountain West play on the season, extending the program's best conference record in a single season. At 12-7, the Rams are now tied for sixth for the most dual wins in a single season.
"Wyoming is a tough place to play at with the high altitude," CSU coach Mai-Ly Tran said. "The girls have done a great job focusing on what matters and taking care of business in tough conditions."
CSU was technically up 1-0 before the match began as Utah State did not have a player for the sixth singles position, and the score drew to 2-0 in the Rams' favor as they won the doubles point with wins from the No. 1 team of Somer Dalla-Bona and Sarka Richterova (7-5) and Tracy Guo and Lucia Natal at No. 3 (6-2).
At No. 1 singles, Radka Buzkova won in straight sets without dropping a game, 6-0, 6-0, for her sixth consecutive victory. Now 23-5 in singles play, the junior now sits alone in fourth in program history for the most singles wins in a single season. Natal then wrapped up her match at the No. 4 spot, 6-3, 6-1, moving her to 17-3 on the year having won her past five matches. Dalla-Bona (No. 2) and Richterova (No. 3) had both won their first set and were leading or tied in the second when the match was decided.
"Radka is a resilient player who breaks down her opponents with making an extra ball in play," Tran said. "She's been feeling really good in training and her matches, and it's given her a huge boost going into these last few conference matches."
The Rams return home this week with matches Thursday against Wyoming (1 p.m.) and Saturday against Nevada (12 p.m.), needing one victory to secure the third seed for the Mountain West Tournament April 27-30 in Tucson, Ariz. The top five teams all receive a bye for the first round.
