Rams’ Bats Start Hot Then Go Cold

Colorado State recorded four hits in the first frame and then just three the rest of the game.
FRESNO, Calif. – The Rams (14-21, 5-8) started the series opener at Fresno State (14-30, 6-10) recording four hits in the opening frame, while also scoring three runs. From then, Colorado State went cold, totaling just three hits the rest of the game and scoring a run to drop game one against the Bulldogs, 6-4 on Friday night.
Hailey Smith paced the Rams, finishing 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI – one in the first and the other in the sixth on base hits – and scoring a run. Peyton Allen was the other Ram to record a RBI, coming in the first on a single. Colorado State drew two walks and struck out just once in the loss but left five runners on base.
In the opening frame, CSU sent seven batters to the dish, tallying four hits and three runs with help from a Bulldog error. Ashley Michelena started the game drawing a walk and was the first out after trying to score on a single to center from second base. Smith helped score the first runs of the game on a single to center, which also had the error, allowed the bases to be cleared and to be on third. Allen followed with a RBI single to center to give the Rams a 3-0 lead.
After the first inning run, Colorado State sent just 10 batters to the plate over the next three innings. The Rams added a run in the fifth after Smith hit a two-out single to center to push Michelena across.
Fresno State scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the second on a wild pitch. In the next frame, FS totaled four runs on five hits to take the lead – scoring with two outs. Colorado State was within one heading to the sixth, but could not make contact the rest of the game, putting one runner on in the last two innings via a walk in the sixth.
Julia Cabral (3-6) started and was given the loss after tossing the first 2 2/3 frames and allowing five runs on five hits. Sydney Hornbuckle hurled the rest of the game, allowing one run and four hits, while striking out three.
