Big Weekend Awaits Rams in Las Vegas

UNLV, No. 70 SDSU also 3-1 in MW play
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – With the goal of proving the program ranks among the best in the Mountain West, this weekend's slate of matches can go a long way toward Colorado State's women's tennis program making a case.
Â
The Rams hit the road once again to face two teams at UNLV, starting with the host Rebels at 2 p.m. (MT) Saturday, followed by a 10:30 a.m. match with No. 70 San Diego State on Sunday. There will be live stats for the UNLV match. All three teams are 3-1 in conference play, each having lost to No. 60 Fresno State.
Â
The matches are important to help start setting the pecking order for the Mountain West Tournament April 27-30, where the top five teams in the standings all secure a first-round bye at El Conquistador Tucson. Air Force is also 3-1, but Colorado State beat the Falcons last weekend.
Â
In coach speak, every conference match is important, but they – and the players – know certain wins carry more weight.
Â
"We try to win every single conference match, but the record helps," CSU coach Mai-Ly Tran said. "These are two tough teams that will help divide the top half and the second half. The goal is to beat both teams. The team knows it's tough competition, and I think they love playing against tougher opponents. It's good to tell them these are two teams we see as the top of the conference.
Â
"I think they're both gritty teams that are outdoor teams, and outdoor teams always do a great job of competing well and making their opponents play. They have strong players up at the top and they've always been consistent in the Mountain West."
Â
Colorado State is coming off a trip to Laramie where the Rams won two conference matches on the same weekend for the first time in 13 years. Any wins this weekend would be another step forward, as the Rams have beaten each team just once in their histories, taking down San Diego State for the first time last season, 4-3.
Â
At 9-6 overall, the Rams' only losses have come to teams currently ranked in ITA, and Tran has a team which is playing well and has been strong at building off high points to create momentum.
Â
"I think they pay attention to how they play tennis. The wins and they way they're playing has given them a lot of confidence," she said. "I don't know if they pay attention to the amount of wins and who, but they're just paying attention of how they're playing. We've played different matches and had some tough losses and good wins, and I think all of it has given them confidence. This is the perfect time to gain some momentum in the middle of our conference season."
