Transfer wins singles title as Rams wrap up first fall tournament

AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – The first tournament of the season produced a champion for Colorado State in four title-matches appearances, as the Rams closed out the Bedford Cup at the Air Force Academy on Sunday.

Transfer Emily Dush captured the Bravo draw crown, beating Abby Cotuna of Air Force decisively, 6-2, 6-1. The Rams played for two other singles titles, with Radka Buzkova and Luana Avelar both dropping tight straight-sets results – Buzkova fell 7-5, 7-5 to Denver's Taylor Melville in the Alpha final; Avelar was beaten by Valentina Rodas of Idaho in the Charlie match, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (0).

This weekend was the first extended look CSU coach Mai-Ly Tran has had of her newest players, and Dush naturally made an impression.

"Emily has a big game and it's fun to watch her play," Tran said. "She didn't have specific expectations for this tournament and was able to play freely. Her experience showed in this weekend's matches. I'm really pleased to see her happy with her performance."

The Rams picked up three other singles victories in consolation matches from Sarka Richterova, Sarah Weekley and Viktoryia Zhadzinskaya.

In doubles play, the pairing of Ky Ecton and Zhadzinskaya fell in the Bravo finals to Weber State's Dylan Lolofie and Sicely Ferreira, 8-5. In three doubles consolation matches, the Rams picked up wins from the tandems of Dush/Richterova, Buzkova/Avelar and Weekley/Zara Lennon.

In the four-day event, the Rams were 19-9 in singles matches, 10-4 in doubles, giving the team with five new members a strong base from which to build from.

"We had great results this weekend. We put ourselves in a good position to win all of our matches," Tran said. "That's hard to do. I believe we focused on doing the right things and not focusing on the results. Right now, we are identifying how we want to play and working on that. This is a special group, and we recognize that very early in our season, and it's exciting. There's more to come from the Rams."

Colorado State will next play when it hosts the Jon Messick Invitational at the CSU Tennis Facility on Sept. 30-Oct. 2
