Rams hold Bucking Broncos to a Scoreless Draw

It wasn’t close at times, but the Rams kept the ball out of the net
In a rodeo, sometimes things get a little crazy and wild. The rodeo passed through Fort Collins when Boise State strutted its way onto Colorado State's soccer pitch.
Despite things being wild, from weather delaying the start of the game to in-game action, the Rams did what they had to do. Holding the Broncos to a scoreless draw saw CSU stretch its streak to a fourth game in a row where it earned a point.
"We've got to get points when we can," coach Keeley Hagen said. "We don't like ties but at least we came out of it with a point, so we'll go with that into our next game."
The Rams also kept a clean sheet for the third time in four games. Defense was the name of the game as center backs Taylor Bee and Lauren Wheeler were forced to be on their toes by a relentless stampede of Broncos in the first half.
The first 435 minutes also saw goalkeeper Maddie Ogden start her first home conference game commanding from the back. She and Emilie Gavillet have spent the past few games trading the net to create different styles of play from the back.
"It was good to be on the field for my first start at home, but they put a lot of pressure on straight away," Ogden said. "It was a little bit stressful, but I think we were able to handle the pressure and decrease their number of shots."
Ogden faced the majority of shots in the first half before she was subbed out for Gavillet to start the second. She stopped six shots from the Broncos who continuously peppered her and the defensive lines with balls over the top, splitting through the defense and finding gaps in a very efficient manner with possession.
The Broncos also tallied up the most possession of the game, more than 56% once the final whistle blew. The ball consistently moved through the middle third, keeping the Rams on the defensive and feeling the pressure whenever the Broncos turned it over.
"I think we had a better effort on the road; we looked like a more composed team," forward Caroline Lucas said. "Without our performance being up to our standards, to walk away with a draw and a shutout is better than a loss."
Things turned for the better in the second half when Hagen's side turned the corner and started pressuring the Broncos themselves and dominating play for about 15 minutes. The Rams led the shot total in the second half with three, all of them just missing the mark.
The best of those three chances came off the foot of midfielder Kaitlyn Abrams, who was on the end of a cross. However, tucked in close to the far post by the 6-yard box, she could not wrap her foot around it to have it curl into the net, but rather curl through the box and out the other end.
"We're just trying to figure out how to be a little more consistent when we're on the ball," Hagen said. "How is our first touch, how is our movement off the ball? I think overall today we weren't able to connect that."
Soon after Abrams' chance, both teams could feel the pressure coming from the other as physicality reached another level. A handful of fouls came out from both sides leaving a couple of Broncos players limping off the field.
The fouls led to two yellow cards of the game, one of them going to midfielder Liv Layton for an altercation with the official. Combined between the two teams, they offered up seven fouls in the second half, with the Broncos having nine total compared to the Rams' three fouls.
"I think tomorrow we will recover hard and get our bodies back into shape," Lucas said. "On Saturday, we'll come out with a little bit of a tactical change maybe … I think if we get composed, we'll be better on Sunday."
The strength of the schedule has been tough for the Rams who have been playing consistently twice a week and just now coming home to play since the beginning of September. However, every game up to this point has been a test and seen the Rams take something from them.
Having played arguably the three best teams in the Mountain West, the Rams look to take the situations they've already been in and the lessons they've learned into the rest of conference play. While the Rams sit at a modest 4-3-4 record, there's still plenty left in the tank to use for the drive.
"I think we opened up the conference slate against some of the tougher teams; it's good to at least gain a point in all of those games," Ogden said. "We know it's going to be battle and we have to put some goals in the back of the net."
On Sunday, the Rams will host the Utah State Aggies in their fourth conference game in the span of two weeks. The Aggies sit at 3-2-1 and coming off of a heartbreaking loss to Wyoming earlier in the day. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. and will have coverage on Evoca and the Mountain West Network.
