Rams Complete Comeback at San Jose State

2/9/2023 10:15:00 PM | Women's Basketball

Colorado State trailed by as many as 13 during the game and didn’t take the lead until the final four seconds

SAN JOSE, Calif. – After trailing by as many as 13 points and playing from behind the whole game, Colorado State (16-8, 9-4) completed the comeback at San Jose State (3-20, 1-11) on Thursday night, 59-57. Cailyn Crocker hit two free throws with four seconds remaining to give the Rams their first lead of the contest.

Colorado State struggled to find its offense early in the game, shooting just 25 percent in the first half, including under 16 percent from behind the arc. The Rams rebounded in the second half, hitting at 36 percent and 35 percent from 3-point range. CSU finished the game hitting 34.7 percent from the floor and 23.3 percent from downtown. The charity stripe was popular during the game as Colorado State made 21 trips to the line, making 18 of them count – more than made field goals.

McKenna Hofschild led the Rams scoring 14 points and dished out seven assists. Hannah Ronsiek made her first collegiate start and scored 12 points along with Cailyn Crocker. Ronsiek scored all 12 points from behind the arc (4-of-8), while Crocker poured in 10 points from the free-throw line (10-of-10). Kendyll Kinzer also reached double figures with 11 points, while also pulling down a team-high eight rebounds.

The Rams finished the game with 12 turnovers, eight of which came in the first half. Colorado State couldn't handle the paint, as the Spartans held a 26-20 advantage in paint points and also grabbed 41-30 rebounds. CSU's bench was quite as well for the game, adding just one point which came from Cali Clark who added a free throw.

CSU started the game cold, missing its first four shots. From there the Rams hit only four field goals the rest of the half, scoring 11 points from the free-throw line. The Rams found themselves down by 13 with 7:42 left to play in the second half, but trailed by just four at the break 32-28, making 9-of-9 free throws and putting together a 6-0 scoring run midway through the frame.

The second half saw both teams trade baskets and the Rams cut the deficit to three after hitting back-to-back 3-pointers to start the four quarter. The Rams tied the game after a three from Ronsiek knotted the score at 49-49 with 7:10 left to play. The Spartans took the lead again before CSU tied the game with 3:09 left to play following a free-throw by Hofschild. San Jose State again took the lead with 1:57 left, which would be the last points the Spartans would score as the Rams scored the final four points of the game.

Sydney Mech had a great backdoor cut which Hofschild found and delivered a perfect pass to tie the game at 57-all with 43 seconds left. In the Rams final possession, Crocker was fouled with just one second left on the shot clock to shoot two free throws, which she made and gave CSU the lead for the first time in the contest.

Colorado State will continue action in California, heading to Fresno State for a Saturday contest at the Save Mart Center at 5:00 p.m., MT.
