No. 45 CSU wins first outdoor matches of spring
BOCA RATON, Fla. – Two matches in one day is a chore, but there was a built-in gap to take away some of the sting.
Â
Then it was gone. A dramatic victory which took four hours to start the day led to a tight window before beginning the second, but Colorado State's women's tennis team came away no worse for the wear with a pair of victories in the Rams' first spring matches outdoors.
Â
The day began with a tight battle at Florida Atlantic, with Zara Lennon clinching the 4-3 victory at the No. 4 singles spot in a third-set tiebreaker. A trip to Lynn University ensued, where the hosts gave the Rams an extra 15 minutes to catch their breath, a 4-2 victory the final result.
Â
"I knew we would be tested with the extra elements of playing outdoors and in different conditions. The team continues to rise to the occasion every time they get tested," CSU coach Mai-Ly Tran said. "They beat two tough teams at their home courts ack to back. It was not easy.
Â
"I'm so proud of this team today. Two gritty wins for the Rams."
Â
No. 45 Colorado State has won three consecutive duals to sit at 10-2 with one more non-conference dual remaining, March 19 in Fort Collins against Creighton. The team begins Mountain West play the following weekend in Fresno, Calif.
Â
The result with Lynn, a top Division II team, came without a lot of stress with the top two doubles teams of Radka Buzkova/Emily Dush and Ky Ecton/Lennon grabbing the doubles point for the team with a pair of matching 6-1 wins. The team victory was set with singles wins from Buzkova (6-0, 6-3 at No. 1), Sarah Weekley (7-6 (4), 6-0, No. 3) and Viktoryia Zhadzinskaya (6-1, 6-1, No. 6).
Â
For Zhadzinskaya, it was her 14th singles win of the season, but just her third in the spring. A deep team has made it tough to crack the singles lineup, but the No. 3 doubles fixture stepped in for Lennon, who played an extremely long and stressful match to wrap up the morning match.
Â
"It was great to see Vika playing well, and it was a huge boost for our second match," Tran said. "Her energy set the tone for the rest of our singles."
Â
The first match of the day went down the wire and put a bit of stress on the travel schedule. The Rams dropped the doubles point as FAU won at the top two spots. Colorado State came back with the first two wins in singles play, as Sarka Richterova won in three sets at No. 5 (6-0, 2-6, 6-2), Dush in straight sets at No. 2 (6-2, 6-3). FAU tied the match at 2 with a win at No. 6 singles, with the final three matches all requiring a third set.
Â
The Owls pulled ahead with a win at No. 4, but the Rams evened it with Buzkova's 6-2, 6-7, 6-1 victory at No. 1, leaving Lennon on the court at No. 3, and her match with Katerina Filip tied at 2 in the third set. As if that wasn't enough drama, Lennon would win the next three games to sit one more from victory, but Filip took the next four to put herself in position before Lennon rallied to win in a tiebreak, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6, her fourth match-clinching win of the season.
Â
The Rams will remain in Florida to train for the next two days before returning home with the rest of campus on spring break.
