No. 43 CSU returns to home setting
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Looking to close out the non-conference portion of the schedule with a four-win run, No. 43 Colorado State's women's tennis team will host Creighton on Sunday (11 a.m.).
Â
With a promising weather forecast for the day, the teams are keeping their options open for the site. If it remains warm enough, it will be played at the CSU Tennis Complex. If the temps drop or wind picks up, it will be played at the Fort Collins Country Club.
Â
The Rams are 10-2 on the season, just five wins shy of matching the program record for wins in a season before conference play begins. They are coming off a weekend sweep of two Florida teams, where the squad played its first two outdoor matches of the season. The team set a program record with seven consecutive wins earlier in the campaign.
Â
"Non-conference play is an important time for teams to build momentum and gain experience against different opponents," CSU coach Mai-Ly Tran said. "The girls have shown they are able to compete in all conditions, which is what is really challenging about the Mountain West conference and will serve them well going into the second half of the season."
Â
Creighton, out of the Big East, is 12-3 on the season having won four of its past five matches, including a win over Villanova. The Bluejays will face Wyoming on Saturday in Laramie. Malvinka Shukla is having an outstanding season for the squad with a 13-1 record at singles, 11-1 at the top spot. She has paired with Leanne Kendall to go 8-4 in duals at the top double spot.
Â
Zara Lennon and Radka Buzkova have been on a roll lately for the Rams, with Lennon winning her past 10 decisions, Buzkova going 9-1. The team's success has been the sum of its parts. While the three doubles teams have remained consistent, Tran has used seven different players in dual singles play, all of whom have played at multiple spots. Buzkova, Emily Dush and Sarah Weekley have all played at the Nos. 1-3 positions.
Â
"I've always said from the beginning I can see everyone play at different spots," Tran said. "We are lucky to be in a position where we have options and depth, a very competitive team which has been a strength for us when we've played a high volume of matches back to back."
Â
Sunday's match will feature live scoring and a live stream.
