Colorado State to play Spartans in Thursday through Saturday series

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Coming off one of the toughest strength of schedules to start the 2023 Mountain West Conference season, the Colorado State softball team now sets its eyes on the San Jose State Spartans as the Rams hit the road once again.
 
What You Need to Know:
  • Colorado State opened its conference season playing all three teams ranked above the Rams in the Mountain West preseason poll. The Rams won the series against the No. 2 preseason San Diego State Aztecs, split two games with the No. 1 preseason Boise State Broncos and went 1-2 versus the No. 3 preseason UNLV Rebels last weekend to earn a 4-4 start to conference play.
  • The Rams, who normally play a Friday through Sunday weekend series, will play a Thursday through Saturday series April 6-8 in San Jose due to the Easter holiday taking place Sunday April 9.
  • Game times are set for 7 p.m. MST Thursday, 5 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday.
 
Scouting the Spartans:
  • San Jose State enters the weekend with a 3-6 conference record and 15-20 overall record. The Spartans currently find themselves on a five-game losing streak after dropping their last two games against New Mexico and being swept by San Diego State last weekend.
  • The Rams are 26-18 overall against the Spartans and 15-12 on the road.
  • Within the Mountain West rankings, San Jose State ranks seventh in offensive efficiency with a team batting average .268, and eighth in the conference in pitching efficiency with a team ERA of 5.30. Colorado State ranks first and sixth in those categories respectively.
Game Notes:
  • Last weekend versus UNLV, junior outfielder Ashley York hit 7-11 (.636) from the plate with seven RBI and a home run. She also drew a walk and stole a base.
  • Five Rams hit over .300 against the Rebels including York, Molly Gates, Peyton Allen, Hailey Smith and Kaitlyn Cook.
  • Allen and Smith have been consistently trading the conference lead in home runs through the conference season as Smith currently sits at 10 home runs on the season with Allen close behind at nine.
  • Senior pitcher Danielle Serna led the Rams in the circle last weekend with 12 innings pitched and an ERA of 3.50. Keeping the Rebels at a .200 team batting average while she was pitching, she also recorded eight strikeouts.
