Colorado State set to play Nevada in opening round of tournament

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State softball team will travel to San Diego, California to compete in the first Mountain West Tournament hosted by the conference is 17 years. The Rams will enter the post-season tournament as the No. 3 seed with the tournament champion earning an automatic bid to the 2023 NCAA Tournament.

What you need to know:
  • Colorado State will play No. 6 Nevada in the opening round of the tournament Thursday morning at 1:30 p.m. mountain time. Upon a win, they will face the No. 2 San Diego State Aztecs later Thursday afternoon at 7:30 p.m.
  • With only the top six teams in the conference qualifying for the tournament, the No. 3-6 seeds will compete in a single elimination first round of the tournament before the bracket becomes double elimination in the second round and beyond.
  • The tournament, hosted by San Diego State will be the first time the conference crowns both a regular season and tournament champion in 17 seasons, meaning even Mountain West veteran coaches such as Head Coach Jen Fisher, in her 13th season at CSU, are in store for a new post-season experience.

Scouting the Tournament:
  • Colorado State will open up the tournament against the No. 6 seeded Nevada Wolf Pack, who the Rams just finished their regular season play against last weekend. The Rams went 1-2 against Nevada in Reno last weekend, with both losses coming by only one run in walk-off fashion. Both teams have high powered offenses that will look to be challenged in the neutral venue.
  • On a win over the Wolf Pack, Colorado State will face off against the No. 2 seeded San Diego State Aztecs on their home diamond. While Nevada is a more recent opponent, the Rams have to go all the way back to their first conference series of the season to study history with the Aztecs. Colorado State opened up its conference season with a 2-1 series win over San Diego State in Fort Collins March 17-19.
  • Rounding out the tournament field, Boise State enters the tournament as the No. 1 seed and regular season champions with the Broncos set the face the winner of the No. 4 seed San Jose State and No. 5 seed Fresno State.
  • The Rams have at least one win over every team within the tournament field.

Game Notes:
  • Last weekend, Colorado State finished up the regular season going 1-2 at Nevada, but these Rams are ready to bring individual momentum into the post-season;
  • Junior Ashley York went 8-12 from the plate with five doubles and a slugging percentage of 1.083 against the Wolf Pack.
  • Peyton Allen and Molly Gates also both finished batting over .400 at Nevada with Allen going 5-11 with three doubles and three RBI and Gates going 4-10 with two RBI.
  • Senior pitcher Danielle Serna led the weekend in both innings pitched and ERA for the Rams as Serna totaled 9.2 innings pitched against the Wolf Pack with a weekend ERA of 2.17 and a .212 opponent batting average.
