Colorado State falls to Wolf Pack in Mountain West Tournament

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Colorado State softball team fell to the Nevada Wolf Pack in the Mountain West Tournament Thursday afternoon, ending its season with an 11-0 loss in five innings.

When these two teams faced off against each other last weekend in Colorado State's final regular season series, offensive production was not lacking for either team, but being shut out for just the third time this season didn't come at an opportune time for Head Coach Jen Fisher's Rams Thursday afternoon.

While the final box score read 11-0 in favor of the Wolf Pack, Colorado State was only outhit by one hit to Nevada as the Rams totaled three and their opponent totaled four. With both offensives hitting near equally from the batter's box, Nevada's ability to capitalize on walks and errors issued by the Colorado State defense was the moral of the game in the opening round of the Mountain West Tournament.

Colorado State gave up three walks in each of the three opening innings, going into the fourth trailing 4-0. After the Rams retired the Wolf Pack in order in the fourth inning, it looked like they were inching back at an opportunity to close the gap. But while Colorado State's bats just couldn't string together base runners, Nevada had its big inning during the top of the fifth.

With three different Ram pitchers taking the circle in San Diego, Nevada once again had two runners on via the walk with only one out. After the first Wolf Pack run of the inning came across on a RBI single, two more walks and an error extended Nevada's lead to 7-0.

The Wolf Pack's dagger to eventually run-rule the Rams would be a three run home run with two outs in the top of the fifth. Unable to rally in the bottom of the fifth to close the gap, the Rams faced the end of their season in San Diego.

The three Rams that recorded hits in Thursday's game includes Maya Matsubara, Ashley York and Molly Gates.

The Colorado State coaching staff will now take time to honor and thank their three seniors, Kaitlyn Cook, Makenna McVay and Jetta Nannen before moving into the off season over the summer. The Rams will return to play in the fall when they compete in a fall season of exhibitions before their 2024 spring campaign at the new and improved Ram Field.
