Rams Drop Game One to Nevada on the Road

5/4/2023 9:24:00 PM | Softball

Colorado State falls to Wolf Pack in high scoring opening game

RENO, Nev. – The Colorado State softball team experienced its fourth walk-off game in a row Thursday night, but unfortunately for the Rams, this one was not in their favor. Coming off a three-game sweep over Fresno State last weekend, winning all three games on a walk-off at-bat, the Rams got a taste of their own medicine in game one against Nevada as Colorado State fell 9-8 off a Wolf Pack walk-off in the seventh.

As the final week of the regular season takes place, the Mountain West standings couldn't be closer with six different teams still fighting for a chance to qualify for the final four spots available in the Mountain West Tournament taking place May 11-13 in San Diego. Colorado State, entering the weekend in the No. 3 spot in the conference, only needs one win this weekend to officially clinch their spot, but going up against a Nevada team that has its back against the wall in terms of qualification, might be easier said than done.

Thursday's game would be a high scoring one after both teams faced over an hour weather delay due to rain in Reno. Once the tarps came off the field and the game got started, Colorado State got the game started with two runs in the first frame thanks to a two-RBI single from Danielle Serna and the bats for both teams stayed hot the rest of the game as both teams finishing the game with double-digit hit counts.

Going back and forth the whole game, the Wolf Pack scored three runs in the first inning and two in the second to take a 5-2 lead after two innings before the Rams took a 6-5 lead in the fourth inning off an RBI single from Molly Gates. Nevada regained the lead in the fifth with two more runs of their own.

With the Rams totaling five extra base hits on the night compared to Nevada's three, runs were being effectively manufactured on both sides of the plate, but neither team was able to fully pull away from the other.

On her second hit of the night, after going yard in the third inning for her twelfth home run of the season, junior Hailey Smith tied the ball game back up at seven with a single that scored Maya Matsubara from first base. Smith's home run placed her back in the conference lead for home runs this season, tied with UNLV's Ariana Martinez.

Colorado State, using three pitchers throughout the game, just couldn't seem to slow down the Nevada offense as an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth put the Wolf Pack back out in front. Down to their last out of the game, the Rams were able to rally back-to-back hits from Brooke Bohlender and Jordan West to tie the game once again off a clutch double to center field by West, her second double of the night.

With back-to-back hits of its own to leadoff the seventh inning, Nevada was able to walk off the game with only one out as Maile Olsen scored Aaliyah Jenkins from third to end the game.

Ashley York finished the game going 3-4 for the Rams also adding a walk as she takes over the lead for the most hits in the Mountain West within the conference season at 31. Four other Rams had multiple-hit games in Colorado State's 14 hit campaign Thursday night including Matsubara, Smith, Bohlender and West.

Colorado State now moves to 10-9 in the Mountain West and 26-18 overall with game two against Nevada set for Friday at 4 p.m. mountain time.
