Rams drop first conference matchup of the season on the road
BOISE, Ida. – Partaking in its seventh five-set match of the season, the Colorado State volleyball team suffered its first conference loss Thursday night to Boise State as the Broncos took sets one, three and five enroute to victory.
Â
Colorado State fell in set one 25-17 with the Broncos hitting .481 as a team. A bright spot for the Rams through the whole night was opposite hitter Malaya Jones who had six kills in set one while hitting at a .455 efficiency herself.
Â
Jones finished the night with 21 kills, her third game in a row with 20-plus, while also hitting at a .292 percentage on the night.
Â
Set two turned in favor of the Rams. Colorado State's block defense was a large part of a 25-21 second set win as the Rams totaled six team blocks in the second. Jones continued her dominance with six more kills in the second frame as well.
Â
In set three, the Broncos gained back momentum on their home court. Contesting the Rams all night with a strong serving presence, Boise State recorded four service aces in the third set to keep Colorado State out of system and back to hitting below .200 in hitting percentage.
Â
Forcing a fifth set for the seventh time this season by winning the fourth set 25-20, the Rams battled back with six more kills from Jones in the fourth and a five-kill set from Kennedy Stanford as well. Despite a run from the Broncos that consisted of five service aces in six points, Colorado State's defense bounced back in the fifth set.
Â
Taking an early 7-4 lead, the Rams held the three-point spread all the way up until the score was 11-7 in favor of Colorado State. A Boise State timeout rallied the Broncos onto a 3-0 run, putting the home team right back into the match. Two Ram attack errors and two Bronco kills were enough to hand Colorado State its first conference loss of the year.
Â
Stanford finished the night with 13 kills while Annie Sullivan rounded out the double-digit kill performers for the Rams with 11. Senior setter Emery Herman dished out over 50 assists for the third game in a row while Kate Yoshimoto had her second-best digs number of the season with 26 total.
Â
Colorado State will remain on the road to face Utah State Saturday afternoon in Logan, Utah. First serve will be at 12 p.m. mountain time on the Mountain West Network.
